Currently we are in the interlude phase, where full core parachains can renew their core without risk of getting outbid (regular sales have not yet started). Afterwards regular market is opened with the start of the leadin period, beginning at 230 KSM. Then declining towards the current target price in the middle (23 KSM) and ending at the minimum price of 2.3 KSM in the fixed price period.

New Price Model live on Kusama Coretime

I already explained among other details how renewals work in [this post](https://grillapp.net/@eskimor/agile-coretime-pricing-explained-166522?ref=12935). Here I want to go into more details on how your renewal price will be determined.

The first concept to realize is that your renewal price is always pre-determined, you know exactly what you are going to pay beforehand.

Ok, so when is the price of your renewal determined? There are three options:

1. When you bought your core regularly previously (call to `purchase`) 
2. When your legacy auction model lease expired
3. At your previous renewal (previous call too `renew`)

Now that we know how the price is determined, that you are paying in `renew`, let's look into how it is determined in each of those cases:

## Renew after regular `purchase`

If you are renewing the core for the first time, after you purchased it regularly in the previous cycle, then the price for your renewal will be exactly the price you paid on that earlier `purchase`.

## Renew for lease holding chains

There used to be some confusion, which I want to clear up a bit here. Matters are a bit complicated because a sale in period X is for period X+1 and in that sale, parameters are set.

What happens exactly is that if your lease is going to expire in period X+1, this will be noticed at the sale rotation in sale X. It will still grant you a core for the entire period X+1, even if your lease ended technically in the middle of that period and it will mark the core eligible for renewal in that period X+1. The third thing it does, is what lead to confusion: It also removes the lease from the state already: Conceptually your lease ends in period X + 1, but it already gets removed in period X  (after you got granted your final period of coretime and the renewal rights). Hence UIs, which directly read the state will show that you no longer have a lease, despite the fact that you still have a core and also can not yet renew. 

For the actual price: The renewal right is given in the sale before, which only has the sale data of the sale even before that. Therefore you will be able to renew at the sellout price of the sale X-1, if your lease expires in X+1.



## Renew after renew

You already renewed before. In that case, the price for your renewal had been determined at that previous renewal, like this:

Either the price you paid for your previous renewal, increased by the configured renewal bump (3% on Kusama right now) or the market price at that time of the renewal: Whatever is cheaper.

In the interlude phase of the sale (the first part where the open market is not yet opened), this will usually be the bumped previous renewal price, except the market price dropped significantly over the sales.

What you can technically do, to reduce the price of your next renewal is to not renew in the interlude, but in the leadin: If you wait long enough, the price will be lower than the bumped renewal price and you get a better renewal price at the next cycle, but:

1. In the leadin period the market is already open, so your renewal is no longer guaranteed, you can be outbid.
2. If you are willing to accept some risk to lower your cost, a regulare `purchase` makes actually more sense as you will get the achieved lower price immediately at that `purchase` , instead of just setting that lower price for your next `renew`.



## Summary

1. Your renewal price is always determined beforehand (previous renewal, expired lease, previous purchase). You will always know one cycle ahead of time how much your renewal will cost.
2. Your renewal price will increase each sale cyle. The best way to reduce it again is to accept some risk and do a regular `purchase` on the open market (leadin phase) instead of renewing. The risk can be controlled: The sooner you buy in the leadin (the higher the price still), the lower the risk of getting outbid.
3. The renew price you pay for an ended release will be the sellout price of the sale before the previous one: It is predetermined a full cycle ahead of time.

I was recently pointed to [Shardeum](https://shardeum.org), a project gaining a lot of traction apparently. They boldly claim on their website, that they solved the blockchain trillema, which is, that of the three: Decentralization, Scalability and Security, you can only optimize for 2.

Interesting! So how did they do that? Via an innovative solution (their words), called: "Sharding".

Hmmm. Sharding is great, that is why Polkadot is a sharded blockchain and indeed it is capable of pushing scalability and if done right, by only marginally reducing security properties.... but it is still a tradeoff. The more you push scalability, eventually security will suffer. So how did Shardeum achieve solving the trilemma? 

Not much in the whitepaper, but in the [docs](https://docs.shardeum.org/docs/architecture/security/security-in-a-sharded-network) you find the answer:

Description: This attack involves an adversary filling a shard
with their own nodes to gain control.
With 33% control, they can halt the shard; with 66%, they can
forge transactions.

Mitigations: Shardeum prevents this by randomly selecting
and rotating nodes.  Nodes can't choose their shard, and
achieving 66% control would mean taking over the entire
network, which is economically unfeasible due to staking
requirements.
```


Errrm. This is not really true. Controlling 66% of a shard is not the same as controlling 66% of the entire network. If we work with byzantine assumptions (33% of nodes malicious), shards of size 20 (total set 1000) and a shard rotation frequency of once per minute, then it takes less than a day until a shard will be compromized with significant probability (>50%): This is with only 33% of nodes being malicious, not 66%. An unsharded network or Polkadot would still work correctly with 33% malicious nodes. 

Now these numbers go down significantly, if you assumed less malicious nodes in the set. E.g. if you assume only 10% malicious, chances of a successful attack only approach 50% after like thousands of years. This does not sound too bad, but on top of that Shardeum does not really work hard to improve the likelihood of these assumptions holding up. In particular, nodes in the shard are known: Therefore any attack is completely riskfree: One just needs to wait until 66% of the nodes in the shard are their friends/own nodes and only then run the attack.

On Polkadot, in comparison: We actually go all the way and assume a byzantine threat model. The system is designed to be secure, even with 33% of all nodes being malicious and colluding. Attacks are not risk free, but high risk, because you don't know who is going to check your statements after you made them and if you get caught, you lose 100% of your stake. Therefore, Polkadot allows for more bad actors, while at the same time works hard to reduce the likelihood of those bad actors. On top of that, even if people would still try, the system would still be secure due to gambler's ruin: They just can not try often enough, because they will run out of money. Shardeum is completely lacking this property.

Shardeum:

- Shard size 20 (at least in the published benchmark).
- Members of the shard are known (no gambler's ruin), you don't try, you just do, once you know you will succeed.
- Not DoS resilient. Above odds can be significantly tweaked to your advantage by DoSing (Denial of Service attack) some honest nodes and thus reducing the required number needed number of malicious nodes even further.

Polkadot:

- Shard size: 35 (5 known, ~30 unknown)
- Members of the shard are not known (approval checkers): Each try you lose all your funds.
- Disputes are escalated to the whole network. Which adds additional security on top: Of those 35 validators only one approval checker needs to be honest, compared to Shardeum where 66% need to be honest.
- DoS resilient: Each checker not showing up gets replaced by even more checkers: Escalation.

Fun fact: Despite having a much more robust threat model (and therefore sacrificing less security than Shardeum), Polkadot is also not scaling badly: We do have limitations, as we did not actually solve the trilemma (neither did Shardeum), but we measured already ~1000 TPS per shard (parachain) and can do 100 of them as of now. Work on the way to scale this up even more. Total TPS on Polkadot is already in the ballpark of 100_000.

Are these optimistic numbers with some assumptions in place (e.g. not too big of a state)? Definitely! But so are the numbers of other chains. In Shardeum, they claim to have reached 5000 TPS with 50 shards (100 TPS per shard),  but this will also only work if enough transactions can be sharded and don't have interdependencies.

Another interesting aspect of Shardeum is that they don't work with blocks, but instead with transactions directly. They ensure ordering via timestamps ... I have no idea how this could work securely and also have not found an explanation in the docs. I would be very interested in learning more about this.

**Not The First**

If you have been paying attention to the developments within the Polkadot ecosystem over the past year or two, you would have noticed multiple projects making the shift from their initial blockchain of choice in favor of Polkadot. [**MapMetrics**](https://mapmetrics.org/), a DePIN project is the latest to make this particular shift.

Projects are being attracted by a much more robust level of [**decentralization**](https://sapphirecrypto.org/2024/05/02/the-centralization-of-decentralization/), as well as a blockchain with exceptional scalability and uptime. As you can imagine, a [**DePIN**](https://decrypt.co/resources/what-is-depin-physical-infrastructure-blockchain) project is heavily dependent upon accurate and up-to-date data. Network downtime is simply not an option.

Another attraction is that of being able to become a layer 1 blockchain via the [**parachain model**](https://decrypt.co/resources/what-are-parachains-polkadots-secret-weapon-explained), and not simply another project being built on a layer 1 blockchain. It’s important to note that there have recently been changes to the parachain model, regarding the acquisition of coretime.

Polkadot is a layer 0 and so has the ability and capacity to house and empower a plethora of layer 1 blockchains in the form of parachains. The benefits and supremacy of Polkadot are yet to be discovered. However, there are signs that this is beginning to change.

If this trend continues, [**my predictions regarding Polkadot**](https://sapphirecrypto.org/2023/11/11/the-polkadot-ecosystem-a-silent-performer-in-this-bull-market/) stealing the show at the tail end of this bull market stand a fairly good chance of becoming a reality. I think Polkadot is the most undervalued of the Top 20 Crypto assets and is likely to garner a lot more attention with Polkadot 2.0.

Sometimes extraordinary ideas and technologies go relatively unnoticed for extended periods, only to later explode without much warning. Even though Polkadot is currently ranked in the Top 20, much of its “brilliance” is still very much a secret.

[**Enjin**](https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/enjin-coin), the blockchain-based gaming project also made the shift to Polkadot. This involved the abandoning of Ethereum, proving yet again that there are viable, and even more attractive alternatives to ETH. The market has been programmed to “worship” Ethereum, and it’s great to see projects breaking away from this mindset.

At the time of this shift, Enjin was able to enjoy a throughput of 5000 transactions per second with transaction fees of approximately $0.005\. [**Layer 2 projects**](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-layer-2) will aid Ethereum in its ongoing challenges. However, blockchains like Polkadot have already won these battles.

However, Ethereum maximalists have managed to convince the majority of the market otherwise. However, you can’t pull the wool over everyone’s eyes forever. Eventually, common sense, [**scalability**](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-scability-scaling), affordability, and an absence of ongoing issues become too attractive to ignore.

**Final Thoughts**

The market will often extend a period of grace. However, at some point, patience is exhausted and attention is shifted elsewhere. In many ways, this is exactly what transpired regarding Solana’s meteoric rise in 2023\. However, Solana has its issues but still manages to secure a large market share.

An increased share for one means a decrease for another. Solana’s increased acquisition of market share is simultaneously a decrease for Ethereum. Solana actually flipped Ethereum, regarding numerous [**DeFi**](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-decentralized-finance-defi) metrics. In my opinion, Polkadot is next. See you next time!
