It's far too late to fix it all now. But why do we think of the collection and disclosure of personal information as “privacy” and “data leaks”. The collection of personal information is is literally the collection of hazardous waste - that information now exists online. And wherever there are pollutants, there is ecological imbalance, the death of native wildlife, encroachment of invasive species, etc. etc. 

We gathered all this hazardous waste in these massive data silos, and *surprisingly (*/s) a bunch of parasites appeared to feed on it all. And now we call the cluster of parasites industry - the advertising industry, big data, social media - and we're too scared to try to kill them off because *money and jobs*. 

What about everything they're sucking dry? What beautiful garden would we live in if we hadn't spilled this toxic waste all over the blooming garden that was the early internet? (yes I know the early internet was it's own special kind of toxic as well)

Learn to read plz. Folks are panicking because some Parliamentarian literally doesn't know the difference between “custodial” and “non-custodial”. In the regulation, you see this line alot.

Which is the source of people's failure to understand. The solution is simple… if you want to interact with self hosted wallets, *don't be a legally regulated crypto-asset provider*. 

It's not illegal to make or use software that gives it's users the ability to interact with decentralized networks in any way. It is - and has always been - illegal to *run a service* that *you control* that handles money but doesn't verify the identity of your customers. 

The thing people seem to be hyperfixating on is: as/if this regulation goes into effect, it will be (1) illegal to make cash payments over 10k EUR for any purpose and (2) illegal to accept anonymous crypto payments *from* your self-custody wallets *to* hosted wallets. *But you needed to KYC to use a CEX (or other “crYpTo AsSeT ProViDeR”) based in Europe anyway! So you couldn't be anonymous! So that's not a new restriction!*

None of that is new! It's just formalizing what exchanges already do. 

That is why, even if you are a loser compliance-head, if you want to create something that is actually universally useful in any tangible way, it is essential that your blockchain based services and DEXs and apps are **completely decentralized** in terms of governance and custody. From day one. No compromises. If they are not, you are legally liable for any activity users do using your service. You are liable to comply with AML law. You are legally a money transmitter if you allow users to transfer anything of monetary value between them, so either you must assert that nothing transferrable is of value, or you must not allow anything to be transferrable. You *must* act if you are aware and able. This has always been the case. 

And this is why selling accounts and items for cash in traditional gaming is against TOS literally everywhere, why games with real cash economies are such a PITA, why centralized exchanges and real cash economy games, online casinos, and basically anyone else working with money online only allow you to load and unload your account to your own bank accounts, with information matching your ID, that they must have on file. None of this is new.

Organizing as a doxxed, incorporated company has **always** been literally incompatible with making a useful cryptocurrency project. Freely accessible cryptocurrency will always be an oppositional force to states - and “compliance” is fundamentally incompatible with sovereign technology. So if you are trying to operate “legally” - in a safe jurisdiction, as a legal entity, with lots of employees, and following the letter of the law… you will literally be unable to make technology that does what it should do. Both because **how something is made matters as much as why it's made** (this could be a whole post by itself) - and because the enforcers and creators of laws literally don't care about the semantics of how your tech works, they only care about it's effects within the framework of the law, and if those effects are not compliant, *you, the creator,* will be held liable if you are aware of it, and you are *capable* of “fixing” it.

In case it hasn't been made clear in the past few years - saying you are just a software developer and you don't control your network is (a) a lie, and (b) does not make you innocent in the eyes of the legal system, especially if you are aware of “illegal” uses of your software. You **must** either **be literally incapable** of affecting the way the technology develops - the networks you build must be multijurisdictional, have multiple widely used implementations by different, seperate, groups in seperate non-cooperative places. Or it must be entirely sovereign, self-regulating, and impossible to modify.

Parity had structured itself as a behemoth - sucking in technical talent like a black hole, and building a technology that needs tens to hundreds of people in close collaboration to maintain. They changed their minds about that recently enough, ofc, but the question is are they backgrounding themselves fast enough?~~ A company - as long as people have jobs and are protected by employment law and corporate governance law - will always have motive to continue existing. Token governance is literally theater if only one entity is even technically capable of designing and putting out updates; or if source code is hosted on github; or if even informally, it only takes the opinion of a small handful of people to determine the ultimate direction of a project.

This regulation doesn't do what you think it does, and ultimately, it doesn't matter - you were following these rules already if you lived in Europe - but the underlying risk that people are responding to has always been a problem. And the fact that people are responding to the news of regulation, and not complaining that our networks and services aren't truly decentralized - so they can plausibly be targeted by it - is the problem here.

If you are wondering why I seem to hold so much antipathy towards AML and KYC regulations, it's pretty simple - terrorists are already funded by national governments, in cash and gold and bullets and bombs. The majority of the time, terrorists are just the security agencies or paramilitary forces *of* various other national governments. You know who AML law affects primarily though? Vulnerable people without documentation. Anyone without a permanent address. Anyone who's documents are from an arbitrary list of countries that already abuse their citizens, regardless of where they live. Anyone who lives in a place that is already being controlled by an abusive regime, regardless of if they support it. Anyone who's documentation is controlled by an abusive individual or employer, or who doesn't have reliable infrastructure. You know, the people who actually need crypto, who actually need resources to get out of their situations. It's bullshit and I don't care for it or anyone who tries to justify it. 

If you are a crypto company and you are building a compliant product or service, you are building a *useless* service, nothing more. 

Tl;dr: Decentralization was never optional. Self-hosted wallets are legal and good. Get fucked with new requirements, or rather, just get fucked in general, custodial cryptocurrency services.

Yeah, no, I don't think building a social network seeded out of the cryptocurrency community is viable. We are brainrot, consolidated. We primarily attract mercenaries and beggars and rejects. And the few examples of light and creativity among us could be shining anywhere, but instead when they choose to live here, they are slowly poisoned and destroyed by those around them, without even knowing it is happening. 

Crypto is possibly good for technical betas - a canary playground for new technologies, and an economic battleground where you can test your ideas before, ideally, strictly quarantining everything to do with crypto and redeploying the technical artifacts to serve a community that actually exists and has a character strong enough to resist the poison embedded inside the technology itself. Except even as a playground you only get trash feedback from people who are just there to suck you dry, trying to make that easier to do to others, who don't seem to have any interest in improving their communities or spaces, and have no context on the technology they are using nor the broader context outside of it. 

There are islands of light in the dark, where smart and thoughtful people who can afford to travel and can get visas easily meet for drinks and partying and do nothing of value together, and then disappear back into the dark and…

One of the big reasons why I left social media at large was because I started seeing the value of esotericism - or rather, my understanding of it, which is: indirectly conveying knowledge and information in the form of symbols and patterns that may be obscure but can be remixed and built upon. I'm going to do two "competitions" this month. One "simple" and straightforward - and the other more complex and difficult. I won't tell you which is which. :)

## How would you like your JAM?

I first started actively participating in the Ethereum community before it launched in 2014\. I was only just deciding on the direction I would take my future at the time, but a couple of those early events in London, and the strange and interesting people I met there convinced me to take up CompSci in uni and learn enough to understand - or even build - distributed systems of the kind that I learned about at those early events.

Gav and Vitalik shared a vision of a world where anyone could build unstoppable applications that were universally accessible without requiring anyone's permission, and that we could earn a living doing that? It tickled my young mind.

I wanted to make grand cryptographic puzzles across the chains like coin\_artist.

I wanted to make sprawling games that grew on their own and had no game master.

I wanted to have a reliable income doing things I loved doing without relying on whether some individual with a big ego and lots of money liked me or not.

I accomplished some of that. I'm actively working on some of that. But I think at least some subset of those goals are things that many of us in this space share though.

And now coreJAM is reviving that original vision of unstoppable applications, in my mind.

The problem with Ethereum, the first iteration of this idea - is that you have to share limited blockspace with everyone else, and the things you create can't be autonomous - they can't be living services. They need people to serve them and feed them to work.

There are workarounds to these problems, ofc, but it didn't change the nature of the platform, you can hide and obscure the costs and limitations of the EVM, but they're always going to be there.

Then substrate came around - and a smart substrate dev can make a chain that does exactly that, run as an autonomous service, doing work for people, instead of making people work for it... Except... That's not wholly correct.

Anyone can run a network based on substrate that provides a useful service autonomously, but it won't be at all unstoppable.

You need to find your own infrastructure and validators and community in order to sustain it, and the time and effort of all of those people are such scarce resources.

And no, Polkadot doesn't solve this for parachains. Having cryptographic security doesn't provide you with redundancy and physical security, or take away the burden of accumulating enough resources to maintain your network.

And that's where I think coreJAM takes another step forward. You get the flexibility and autonomy that could be provided by a substrate based chain, while retaining the permissionlessness and security and reliability of a smart contract on a large blockchain. There are still tradeoffs of course - you still share limited space with others, and pay for it, and complexity will be as expensive as ever, if not more so - but that's like a fun puzzle, and the way the costs are spread out - between you, and your users, will be completely up to you.

How do you accomplish your desired functionality without having to make it complicated? How do you keep logic offchain as much as possible while still building something unstoppable and unbreakable?

These are all considerations we've had to keep in mind in the past decade building smart contracts, but now we will have so much more to play with.

What does your application or service do?

Based on the [Samsara](https://grillapp.net/@jams-unhinged-pallets/contemplations-on-samsara-311) idea, (which is itself inspired by ["One red paperclip"](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_red_paperclip)) Paperclips Forever intends to be a decentralized arbitrage engine or OTC trading desk for acquiring assets hosted within the greater Polkadot network. Users essentially sacrifice time/opportunity cost and choice to the system, in exchange for an increase in their perceived/subjective value held based on some set of declared preferences. 

Tl;dr: You give it stuff and tell it your preferences ("I prefer x over y, I value z as 2.5w" and such,) and it performs swaps with other users and resources it has access to (like dexes) in order to maximize your perceived value based on your declared preferences.


More in depth:


We have some pool of resources controlled by the "app", which users can voluntarily contribute to, to which the "app" will keep track of contributions. Each user's tracked contribution is available to them as collateral which they may tap to access other user's resources (overcollateralized) based on their declared preferences when they submit a "solution". Solutions may use up to some threshold of value declared (less than) equivalent to the user's collateral by it's owners, and must provide each owner with "greater" value than they take as declared in their preferences within a preset time period (and in the event of a shortfall, the collateral is directly provided to the owners of the borrowed capital). 


In CoreJam (Collect-Refine-Join-Accumulate), we have two opportunities to execute logic. First during the Collect-Refine phase, where we are able to execute (refine) tasks in parallel, and then during the join-accumulate phase, where we have metered execution that is not in parallel, but has access to onchain state and resources. 


The former phase is where we have an opportunity to submit (collect) the solutions and preferences of users, and verify them for validity (refine), based on the state we have access to - this would involve checking all the assets declared in the solution or preference exist as part of the holdings of the app, and are valued by preference appropriately, and within the collateral of the solver.

Finally when we join and aggregate solutions, we can perform a sort based on which solutions provide the maximal value to the maximal number of users, and then iterate downwards executing the instructions in each solution, discounting overlapping/conflicting solutions, until all solutions are accounted for and executed.

In practice, some of these executions will fail in whole or partially, be frontrun, or otherwise not provide the amount of value they expected to - this will mean that we probably won't see many solutions involving assets that have low liquidity or high levels of volatility, unless users prefer them highly enough. 


The app itself would be a participant in its own game, with a simple preference for whatever resource it needs to sustain it's own operations (so, DOT) - and may be able to track contribution over time to distribute resources to contributors (including the creator/deployer) in the case it gets dissolved. 

We'd use no explicit oracle mechanisms (although users may use an oracle to inform their preferences and may update them as often as they like), no complex onchain logic (verifying balances during collection-refine and sorting+filtering+executing solutions during join-accumulate), so I think this is plausible to build using CoreJAM as I understand it. 

The goal of the app would be to make you feel like you're upgrading forever, as long as you're keeping your preferences up to date. As they say "one must prefer wealth in order to accumulate wealth", and, as they don't, "or you can just get what you want directly and enjoy your life." - "Paperclips Forever" should be able to cater to both of these audiences, by letting users declare their preferences, you can offload your unwanted assets, dust, permissions, voting rights, airdrops etc. in exchange for what you actually want. Be that to accumulate capital in the form of your preferred version of Hard Money, or to get that shiny specific NFT that holds some sentimental value to you specifically, or even to buy a growing number of votes on that stubborn parachain that isn't funding your treasury grant 😈. The longer you play, the more your preferences are met.

So, it's interesting to me how good tooling and asset marketplaces, absent of culture to the contrary, seems to spawn an ecosystem of copypasta shovelware/sludge content around it.

* Game engines (ie, all the Unreal engine games that just tape a simple movement script to a default metahuman and call it “next generation graphics”)
* Blockchains (the era of copypasta Bitcoin and Ethereum forks is over, long live the era of copypasta CosmosSDK Ethermint enabled \*and/or\* “L2” EVM chains that all host the same uniswap fork and horribly slow and unreliable bridge to Ethereum mainnet, \[that you could have made 6 years ago with parity-ethereum, parity-bridge and a json chain config file lmao\])
* Art :) :) (your ai stuff all looks the same to me. Wiggle the prompts a little more plz. Maybe ask it to make something in the style of studio ghibli next time or something idk, I write weird prompts.)
* Writing (see above. Google is completely useless nowadays because the first page is usually entirely AI written listicles or referral-program “product comparisons” that all sound exactly the same and convey no real information.)
* Short form video content (All the sludge seems to be made using tiktok’s editor or capcut. All of it. Their TTS voices make my head feel anaesthetized.)

But somehow there seems to be some kind of spice that you can add to that kind of tooling, some complexity or difficulty, that makes the output of a community so much more interesting.

Like, compare the average Godot or Bevy based game to the average Unity or Unreal based game. You'll notice: less polish, more interesting ideas and game mechanics. Sure, a bunch of games built on Bevy are just rust devs fucking around, but that also means virtually every game built using the engine tries something weird. And sure very few larger games have been built in Godot to date because of the lack of first party support for console builds, but it is so easy and quick to make something small and unique in Godot and it really shows in what people have made with it.

Or, the average Substrate based project vs the average CosmosSDK project. Again: worse UX on average on team Substrate, (outside of XCM on Polkadot ofc, which is unrivaled entirely in crypto, especially by *bridges, which suck and are irredeemable,*) less stuff comes pre-built. But I literally don't know a single copypasta substrate project. Every chain has some innovation or character that makes it feel notably different and independent of every other project (except Moonbeam, whose only innovation is the lack of innovative ideas, giving old people from Ethereum land a comfy place to LARP Polkadot Community participation 😋).

Is it just that the tooling is actually *worse*, which adds to the barrier to entry and filters out low effort attempts at creation? Or is it something more complicated than that? More flexibility - more levers and controls that are more visible up front - less, more simple tools, that are less restricted in their use and application in complex and emergent ways?

Something that always frustrated me when substrate was being designed and default pallets were being implemented, was the apparent fear of implementing anything that could become uncontrolled or emergent in its behavior. Everyone was so scared about controlling state size - making sure every list on the chain had hardcoded size bounds, making sure we had no recursive struct, nothing self-referential, no linked lists or graphs, making sure everything of value was permissioned behind council or governance. A core part of the future plans for Polkadot seem to be walking that philosophy back, and making as much as possible permissionless again, which makes me happy. I guess all the boring people are ~~dead or~~ retired now, which makes me happy.

Ultimately, even the lowest effort Unreal game today would absolutely blow the minds of the biggest AAA game devs fifteen years ago - and the most simple substrate chain with just sudo and runtime upgrades - would blow anyone in crypto’s minds 6 years ago (and a good chunk of people's minds today, if they knew to pay attention lmao) - they are both objectively *good tools that make good things*. But one comes with: a template scene, an asset store that shows everyone the same things, a user interface that discourages in-depth customization and, a TOS that precludes games from going out of the explicit control of their publishers due to user submitted content - sound familiar? The other one is defined *explicitly* by its ability to create things that mutate themselves over time based on user interaction, and no real restrictions on how you can use it, other than your ability to read docs and navigate rust codebases. lol.

My hypothesis is that: it's not actually true that good tooling makes bad outputs. Good tooling makes good output, but established convention and strict structure turns good tooling into something that produces repetitive output, which is bad.
