On this first episode of "Knowing the artists", we caught up with the creator of the [Kusama Kings](https://singular.rmrk.app/collections/2644199cf3652aaa78-KK01) collection.

Our session with Kusama Kings father was more focused on trying to understand the reason behind his successful collection which has pulled in 760 KSM ( $275 K) in volume

How did you start your NFT journey? 
> My NFT journey has been fast and steep, I knew about NFTs in 2017 as I saw crypto punks but didn’t get it, then again I saw them pop up in 2020 starting to sell for a lot and though that’s cool but isn’t my area of expertise so didn’t look twice, then not until I got in the Dotsama community and started seeing NFTs pop up there and on Singular did I really start to take notice. Once I had skin in the game through winning a [Kupepe](https://singular.rmrk.app/collections/72e18096820781a12b-KUPEPE) in a raffle in August) I started to become interested which I think is the same with everything, anyone asking me about crypto I tell them just buy £50 of btc and then you will naturally start learning more. 
So then I had started looking on singular and thinking about if I could do my own, then I went on holiday to Kyrgyzstan in September and I saw a picture of this king randomly that the idea came to me, I text [Rachel](https://twitter.com/ladykusama) that night to see if she would be keen and two weeks from the message we had launched so been a whirlwind, learning as we go. But has been an amazing journey 

What’s your background in crypto?
> I started my journey in Crypto in early 2017 and dipped my toe into ETH and BTC. I didn’t really understand the value behind them I just saw a friend make a ton of money buying ETH at $10 and wanted to jump on with him. Then dabbled into alt coins Jan 18 and watched them all burn to the ground. Didn’t really return until the covid crash and haven’t looked back since 90% of my brain power now goes into crypto and NFTS

What do you consider the most important reason for the success of Kusama Kings? 
> I was already super heavy in KSM and in the Chaos Dao community and that’s where I started seeing all these NFTs crop up, then once I saw how easy it was to create a collection on there it was a no brainer. I also hate the gas on ETH (as everyone does) and didn’t want people or myself paying fees to mint and buy the nfts. It is also supper saturated over there, Singular is new and up and coming and you can make your mark and be on the journey with them. Just way more exciting

Where do you envision Singular in the future?
> The number 1 NFT platform in the space. And I firmly believe that no one is doing or planning what they are doing half the stuff wouldn’t even be possible on ETH. I genuinely think value will naturally flood there over time and we will see it as the dominate platform in the whole crypto space. 

 I see with my own eyes that the motto of “Pays to be a $King” is not a joke and there’s true value in the community behind. Can you do a sum up of the main perks that gives being part of this community? 
> Yeah it really does, Firstly like you said it’s the access to the community ‘The Great Hall’, people sharing trades, Alpha, gameplans for things like Rome, NFT projects. 
> We as a project are starting to add more utility to the holders over time which you have seen but we aren’t making that public for now. 
> We are also panning IRL meet ups across the world next year (London, Amsterdam, LA= and Ny) so will throw a few cool surprises in there as well. 
> A lot of people in crypto or especially NFTs can’t really relate to a lot of IRL friends as people don’t get it so cementing those bonds and finding your people with the community you hold the NFT with is crucial in my opinion. 

Do you have any advice for any new artist that’s thinking to mint its own art on Singular about how they can create a successful product with a strong community? 
> Marketing and strategy! Anyone can upload JPEGs to Singular and they can be decent art, but without a good strategy (collections size, rarity etc) and marketing then its impossible to gain market share and traction. Decide all of this from the outset and look at collections that have done well and get your game plan together pre-launch 

What are features are you missing the most in the platform?
> BIDDING! Being able to make offers on NFTs will be a game changer for liquidity, volumes and adoption. I think it is being underestimated massively and will send the platform and NFTs on KSM to the next level.  

What’s the final purpose around Kusama Kings and all the other [collections involved](https://singular.rmrk.app/space/DSVZroU95KSVZKVr2pFdKfJkQtkgU5U1rkrBdeVnktHWmM4?tab=created&creator=true) with them? 
> Who knows! We will continue to build and innovate around it there is no set plan at the moment, we are only 6 weeks old and coming up with stuff we think fits as we go which is exciting! We will continue to think outside the box and deliver value for the holder’s long term! 

How you came up with the new designs of the Kings? 
> It's been pretty natural, me and Rachel just chat throughout the week and come up with them as we go, we had an initial set that we came up with pre-launch then we have been free balling. We are never short of ideas, our brains think about kings constantly. 

Are you following closely the crowdloans? If yes, what are the projects you are following closely? 
> Yeah I keep an eye on them (mainly KSM) I have now sold all my Dot. Ones I went largest on are [Picasso](https://twitter.com/ComposableFin) and [Bit Country](https://twitter.com/BitDotCountry). The Picasso team is amazing and [Brainjar](https://twitter.com/0xbrainjar) has a great vision which is focused on community also, so looking forward to see what they do. Bit Country is most exciting for us as can allow us to potentially take Kusama Kingdom to the next level in the metaverse (but we will see once its up and running) 

What would you say to the people who think that NFTs are just JPEGS? 
> NFTs = Art with utility 
Utility=Unlimited potential

Finally, to anyone who’s thinking about buying a $King and being part of this community, what would you say to him?
> Pays to be a $King 
Joking, I have never tried to force people to buy or had to shove it down people’s throats which is great it’s been organic and people hearing through word of mouth. I understand that it is a higher priced NFT so I would say speak to someone else who has one get their unbiased opinion and see if you think you would like to be part of the community and on this ride!

Who's [Yumi Arts](https://twitter.com/YumiArtsNFT)? How did she start with NFTs and Crypto?
> I’ve been drawing pixel art for many years, but always considered it a hobby. IRL I’m a student going for 2nd degree in psychology, so I was pretty far from art in education part. I joined crypto in 2017 with some spare money – bought BTC and ETH, lost a lot in ICOs. Then I’ve been constantly trading and researching (and continuing to do so even now). I minted my first NFTs on ETH, but they didn’t sell and I forgot about them. And then I started reading about DOT ecosystem 

You are one of the biggest artist of Singular with 7 collections and being top 3 artist by volume. What made you choose Singular as the platform to mint your art?
> My friends told me about Kanarias not long ago before I started my career. It’s really amazing what RMRK team is developing and it’s a shame that I had to buy birds on 2nd hand market. But after researching a bit, I found that there is a full-scale marketplace on Singular and decided to post some arts there. I never expected the [Kitty collection](https://singular.rmrk.app/collections/800f8a914281765a7d-KITTY) to explode like it did and now spending 99% of my free time to support and expand it. 
What makes Singular different from other spaces is the community. You can ask any person from a top collection owner to [Bruno](https://twitter.com/bitfalls) himself – and they will actually help you! I never seen any other platform being so friendly and helpful.

You are at the heart of the Kusama NFT community, where do you see the platform/community in the upcoming months?
> I don’t like being maxi on something, but RMRK has one of a kind community, team and ambitions. I’m sure as RMRK 2.0., [MOVR bridge](https://twitter.com/RmrkApp/status/1460534026310139905) and other functionalities start working, a whole new era will start. There isn’t a single NFT space that has same possibilities as RMRK, so I’m sure it will be leading platform in Crypto NFT sphere.

Doge, Shiba, Floki… all dogs, why did you choose kitties?
> Uh, well because I love cats! You can see from my Dreamscapes collection (and some Kitties) that I like drawing a bit darker stuff too, but most amazing for me is to combine different styles, characters and moods in one metacollection.

Do you have any advice for any new artist that’s thinking to mint its own art on Singular about how they can create a successful collection?
> I can tell that being sincere is really important. What I noted that almost every top collection (including mine) is being built by people without much experience, but we all improvise and try to create something new.

> Sure! I’ll drop some alpha here 
> A % of sales will go into treasury that will allow Kitty Gang to buy and raffle NFTs between the community – Kanaria raffle already begins ASAP. Later there will be many more uses of the treasury. 
There will also be NFTs that grant % of sales to holders each month, I wanted to make it long time ago and we are already near Kitty #200, so it’s time to begin. It’s a perfect way to expand and make the community even more active than ever.
That’s only the beginning of revenue sharing system and I’m planning to develop it further once RMRK 2.0. comes out. My collections will be adapted to this technology and Kitty Holders will receive HUGE benefits once we go to the next chapter.

How you come up with all the new designs for Kitty paradise? So far 190 created and they all look really original!
> I spent my lifetime watching movies, reading books and playing games, so that’s not too hard to imagine new stuff

> Yes! My most anticipated projects are [Subsocial](https://twitter.com/SubsocialChain), [Bit.Country](https://twitter.com/BitDotCountry) and [Picasso](https://twitter.com/ComposableFin), I’m really bullish on them. There will also POSSIBLY be some collaborations with parachains, so expect Kitty news as always.

What would you like to see in the NFT space in the the future? (Metaverse, gaming, revenue sharing…)
> I really hope to see real games and real metaverses. Currently a lot of games only pretend to be games, but I expect to see a lot of developments this/next year. There are lots of insane projects that are only being born, for example Kanaria metaverse! 

What’s the biggest value of being part of the Kitty Gang?
> People who joined the Kitty Gang put huge trust in my work and I won’t disappoint them. There is, of course, monetary value - we went from 0.2 to 7-8 KSM floor and collection is not complete yet. 
There are airdrops – [DreamBits](https://singular.rmrk.app/collections/800f8a914281765a7d-DREAM) are only beginning here. There will be access to special collections, collabs and possibly even metaverse scale collaborations. 
Once collection is minted, I will begin the new era of Kitties and start working on the RMRK 2.0. implementation. Kitty holders will have extreme benefits there.

Behind the Kitty Paradise: Yumi Arts

Today's interview is with [Satori](https://twitter.com/satori_crtvlab), the mind behind the collection of [Chaoz-Sama](https://singular.rmrk.app/collections/7c286d92636e99d145-CHZ). His collection has moved over 200 KSM in volume and it's one of the most active NFT communities on Singular.

First of all, tell us a bit about yourself,how did you start your NFT journey? what’s your background in crypto?
> I’m just a normal lad, my IRL job is an architect. I love anime and retro games. As for my crypto journey, I am a newcomer, started in the crypto world in January 2021. I started with HOT-LUNA-DOT. Once I got exposure to DOT,  I did more research and became a Kusama maximalist. 

What made you choose Singular as the platform to mint your art and how were your beginnings? 
> My NFT project started due to my love for Kusama .I discovered [Alice und Bob](https://twitter.com/alice_und_bob) in late August, DM’ed him and he surprisingly replied. At that time, I saw cryptopunks were the trend which led me to the idea of doing an experimental NFT based on pixel (due to my limited knowledge at that time) . I asked again Alice und Bob where I could mint my NFTs and he linked me to [Singular](https://singular.rmrk.app/). 

You are a very active person in the NFT community of Singular, where do you see the platform/community in the upcoming months? 
> What I like the most about Kusama is its friendly community, so I took community-building as a vital point for my collection. About RMRK, I think the team is second to none and their work is solid, I am lucky to be treated so well considering that I am not a big personality. I think we can have more exposure in terms of community in the near future as we have new artists, OG collections are increasing in quality over time and most important of all, we have Opensea and big collectors coming into RMRK.

You are pixel art artist, any plans on trying a new style or creating a new collection besides [Chaoz-Sama](https://singular.rmrk.app/collections/7c286d92636e99d145-CHZ)? 
>I don’t consider myself a pixel artist, I do pixel art because I think “Degenerate Collectors” love pixel art (LoL).In fact, the idea of my collection is from my favourite anime “Dragon Ball” but as I said before, Chaoz is an experimental collection. Once I get all the data and have the right community, I’m going to do a new collection with more improvements, alpha and of course I will be open to try a new style! Please, do note that the new collection will still be related to Chaoz.

Do you have any advice for people beginning their journey in the Dotsama Eco? 
>I would truly suggest that if you want to learn about Dotsama you should look out for the most well known people that pop on twitter and ask them about joining your community. A Chao member said that “strong communities win” That’s the motto I applied in asset investment or Chaoz

What are the features you are missing the most in the platform? 
>I would say bidding or a more NFT-friendly wallet. I would also like a way of connecting creators and collectors more easily and last but not least the curated's main page feature could still be unclear for some

Let’s go straight to the point-The Chao Gang Warfare- Could you do a brief explanation of it? 
>Chao Gang War is an experimental MORPG community event, I got the idea from my all time favourite game GTA San Andreas and the war mechanism is from a project which I’m following closely [ROME](https://twitter.com/romedaofinance). The idea is to create a more solid & friendly community starting within the Chao-Sama Collections, where all the collectors  are equal and they can win it by talking to others. I created “groups” to make it "GTA" kind of style so alliances & betrayals are always open for interpretation. I see you are really focus on growing the community around the Chaoz-Samas. Besides “The Chao Gang Warfare” any other plan you are thinking about?

> No, I am not. I crowdloaned for Picasso ,Bit Country and Subsocial but my main focus now is Chaoz-RMRK-ROME in that order. 

What’s the biggest value of being part of the Chaoz-Sama community? 
>New friends! You can always chit chat, ask for advice, and also… having the chance of earning some KSM through events! I have 3 important people in the group that are constantly giving me advice and support, but in general, the Chaoz community is very supportive with me.

Chaoz-Sama and its Chao Gang Warfare 🔫

If you have entered in the Singular rabbit-hole you may have found a NFT collection composed of round pink faces...thing is Po-Ku's go far beyond than that. Revenue sharing, charity sponsorships... way more than just a NFT!

In "today's" post I talk with [Chekov](https://twitter.com/chekov8soup), the mind behind Po-Ku and someone who I personally want to express my gratitude for his time, work and humbleness

Could you provide a brief explanation of what’s the aim of Po-Ku people?
> Po-Ku started out as a love letter to Polkadot and Kusama, but morphed into the idea of exploring a process of creating a system of shared wealth within a community of equals, and also seeing if it was possible to translate the activity that occurs within an NFT collection into tangible positive real world benefits.  

If I buy a [Po-Ku NFT](https://singular.rmrk.app/es/collections/d0b1cf79e798869b2f-POKUPEOPLE), what am I entitled to?
> The primary collection of Po-Ku are the “Po-Ku People”, and each NFT entitles the holder to make proposals, vote on project decisions (e.g., charity, price changes, staking/validating), receive a weekly wage of KSM, and influence future Po-Ku stories/designs. I regard those that hold Po-Ku People as shared owners of the project.

> However, things have morphed a little from that initial collection as it faced growing pains. The pre-sale collection was created as a solution to four challenges we were facing: 1) pro-level snipping, 2) being swapped with DMs from disappointed collectors that missed out, 3) the risk of me suffocating the oxygen out of the project by being so slow at drawing the art, 4) and fatigue of on the initial 7 council members having to do all the heavy lifting.  Unfortunately the 50 pre-sale certificates sold out in an hour, which didn't help me solve challenge 2, so I created an additional pre-sale collection for those in other timezones/etc that missed the initial sale. Holders of pre-sales receive immediate full rights as a council member and a later air-drop of a Po-Ku People art (at which point the certificate is burnt).

Po-Ku people NFTs are one of the most detailed NFTs on Singular, what’s your creative process?
> Most tend to start out with the idea of a character that could exist within a not-so-distant future DotSama world. The goal was to make them somewhat grounded, but interesting.  Each Po-Ku person contains a little excerpt from their life in their NFT. The story then informs design choices. 

> An important aspect of my creative process is setting deadlines and making them public, if I didn’t do that then I would probably still be tinkering with 001. 

> Drawing round pink faces from various angles and lighting was probably a strategic misstep from a time perspective, but it seems their differences are appreciated, so I’m glad the extra time is translating to value for those that own them.

> Generally, drawing is akin to being an archeologist, slowly dusting away the surface with a flurry of lines and then erasing those lines until something sticks. My process is quite time-consuming.

What were the technical difficulties that the Po-Ku validator node faced?
> None so far. Po-Ku is really blessed to have some experienced validators in our community. [Paradox from paranodes](https://twitter.com/ParaNodes) has taken the lead and having him as the primary mentor was a no-brainer, if you’ve ever seen his work as a senior ambassador for Polkadot/Kusama, or his youtube video series, he has a wealth of knowledge and is so generous with his knowledge. On top of that, he is just a really decent human being.

What’s the current APY that Po-Ku is giving to its council members?
> It is a little too early to calculate that accurately, but anyone is welcome to inspect our account payouts. We initially started with staking and and just recently shifted to validating. Staking was around 20%, our first week of validating was 71%, but the validating won’t stay that high in future weeks. We are aiming for something between 20% to 40%, which also includes us removing some returns for our charity fund. The goal is to ensure that even if the NFT market falls over, one Po-Ku People NFT will always have the value of 1 KSM or higher staked. I have some strategies to shift that quite a bit higher, but I’m keeping it a secret for now.

How Po-Ku manages its treasury and how are the funds distributed?
> Funds are distributed using a script that [Martin Jensen](https://twitter.com/martin__jensen) kindly created. We grab a list of all the those that own the eligible NFTs and then divide up the staking/validating rewards for the week by the members, subtract a little for charity, and sometimes subtract a little towards people that have helped Po-Ku achieve a strategic goal (e.g., Martin and Paradox).

Tell us about the Charity side of Po-Ku People 
> Well I really liked the idea of having something that generates perpetual returns for charity via staking/validating and we have some ideas on how we might expand upon this for the future. I honestly think the charity aspect of Po-Ku was probably the best design choice with the project, as it has brought together the most amazing group of caring, supportive and giving individuals. So much positivity and generosity within our little Po-Ku People community and it is a bit overwhelming at times. It has been so lovely and I always look forward to logging into our discord to catch-up.

Charity Funds allocation towards the work of PEF in Nigeria. 
How was it made?
> All our donations are currently made p2p.  Fortunately PEF is an organisation that [shadyblack](https://twitter.com/shadyblack) is a major part of and she suggested it as an option for a Po-Ku donation and our members voted to approve it.

How do you feel about the outcome of the donation?
> I think I dissociated a little from reality when Shadyblack sent me through the photos. Seeing all those children’s faces smiling and drawing was amazing. The basic plan was to just make a donation towards PEF’s existing work, however it was Shadyblack’s own initiative to place Po-Ku branding on colouring books and signs, and have a canary bird for children to colour in. She and her team did an amazing job. The children’s smiles are now etched into my mind and our small community is energised to do more charity work now.

What to expect in the future for Po-Ku people? 
> I would love to share what is happening behind the scenes, but I have to keep it quiet for now. I can say we are making good progress on stage 2 of Po-Ku with an anticipated launch Q1 2022. It is something that will enable us to provide extra value for council members and charities.

> Any goal about Charity acts/donations to be reached in 2022?
No specific goals. I want to side-step the pressured fund-raiser approach, and for us to gather donations as opportunities arise, and to explore the best charitable options at those times. This approach will just make it easier for us to sustain longer-term and not burn out.  But I do suspect it won’t be the last donation towards PEF.

**Things to consider:**

* DAOs and Communities are participating and buying land together. Large plots of land grouped together will have some advantages (possibility to build more complex structures, height…) and at the end of the day, remember that you want to have fun and being with your friends is one way of it.

* [Castle quest land](https://rmrk.gitbook.io/kanaria-skybreach/fundamentals/quests): In order to build a castle, you need a 5×5 plot with an epic in the centre, there were around 20 locations that matches these requirements… and all of them were gone in minutes!

* Big squares with epic/rare land rather than isolated epic land: One of the biggest fears of the community was that there were not any epic land left for the Kanaria phase, with just 5 days left for the beginning of this phase, as I see it, it is realistic to say that there will a decent amount of them left. The height bonus or the [Othala Chunkies](https://twitter.com/SkybreachNFT/status/1537150941870317568?s=20&t=fGX3JyM3m7tkgTn2lWf3sQ) bonus were key in all the thinking behind buying big squares vs isolated land, and as a result of this, there won’t be any junk land

* [Rich entropy land](https://twitter.com/SkybreachNFT/status/1537150925973880839?s=20&t=fGX3JyM3m7tkgTn2lWf3sQ): Epic land’s entropy goes from 0.001% to 0.01%. All the 0.01% entropy land was bought in the first hours of the Kokopelli phase. Higher entropy means higher chance for natural re-breach. This could result in a really beneficial factor in a game economy where resources will be used to craft items or build new structures

* Edges and airship docks: [Chunkies](https://rmrk.gitbook.io/kanaria-skybreach/fundamentals/skybreach-avatars/chunkies) can’t fly, so they need airships in order to move to other zones of the map. Using them may have a monetary cost and in a space where everybody wants to live from passive incomes, building one could be really appealing

* Cyber land for a Cyber Island: Kanaria Skybreach will be composed of [several different islands](https://rmrk.gitbook.io/kanaria-skybreach/fundamentals/land). The biome of the first “Skyland” is Cyber, one of the things that have been said about biomes is that they will slightly boost the performance of your avatars, but who knows if the biome of the land when matching the biome of the skyland can also boost the type of resources of that specific land. From my point of view, it’s something that makes totally sense and even if it’s just a speculation, I wouldn’t be surprised if land with the cyber biome has a bonus in this first “world”

* Welcome to the Wild Southeast 🤠: It has already been confirmed that there will be “something, something” happening in the unavailable land of this part of the map. Events? PvP Games? RMRK Hub?… I bet that there will so many cool things happening there and being close to a zone with high activity may end up being a good play

* One man team player: Maybe you want isolation or explore things by yourself, then it might be interesting for you being in an island. Questing, exploring, PvE… Anyway, an island is always nice, don’t you agree?
