Blockchain Games vs Traditional Games
We recently sat down for a quick conversation with our CEO & Co-Founder Cédric Decoster to answer some questions that may help you get an insight on how we, at Ajuna Network, think in general about traditional and blockchain games. Here are our key points:
Many people don’t understand blockchain gaming or in-game assets so why is it taking off?
Games are immersive as you know and currently not a lot of people think about owning and possessing in-game items and these items already hold a big value. Think of MMORPG where owning a skin is a big thing like in World of Warcraft or Diablo for example where you showcase how big and strong you are and where it creates a need as it’s not easily accessible. Once you own it, you feel a valuable difference as it’s a means for the player to express themselves. Many games normally don’t have a feeling of ownership from a player perspective but in this ecosystem there’s that feeling and the interoperability is important.
What would be the first step for gaming studios to adopt blockchain?
First thing would be to have an API or infrastructure to access the blockchain as an infrastructure and from the Ajuna side, we remove the obstacle where you need to download a Metamask wallet or get verified and just prefer the traditional way of logging in, creating a password, connecting a google account and go straight away to playing the game. The blockchain aspect comes in when one reaches a certain level where you decide to purchase an asset at your own will and its gas less and you end up feeling that actual sense of ownership. The end goal is the motivation and for a user to want to play more. And from a game studio perspective, it’s more of thinking what kind of ownership do I want to provide in the game? What is the part that is valued for the player is the question. It’s not like you can just raise money, create any game, and then it will just create a very good revenue model. I think it’s very hard to create something which can persist and help create a really healthy economy. It was not even easy for the traditional games, so to speak. Nothing but real ownership matters and as this space evolves it is very possible that there will be more players and studios entering the market.
Traditional games have for long adopted this in-game strategy, so what’s the difference in blockchain?
Let’s take games like Diablo 3 for instance, which had a real money auction house at one stage but was discontinued after a year as it was ruining the gameplay. The difference here was the fact that the players didn’t really own the items and by that I mean if they were to get hacked or the game had issues, there was a serious chance of them losing everything thereby rendering that asset value-less. Blockchain on the other hand, gives that player more security as they definitely own that in-game asset and there’s a sense of security in this case due to smart contracts which provides a far better option to the player in today’s world.
While traditional games have already introduced in-game assets and especially trading in outside marketplaces, where people can go and buy them with real money, there’s always that risk involved with your account getting hacked or something happening to the game where you may lose it all. However, here’s where it’s getting interesting to see how blockchain gaming can help the player by giving them real ownership of the assets and seeing how these games develop even further once this ecosystem gets bigger.
About Ajuna
At Ajuna, we understand the need for a change, and so we use blockchain-based games as decentralized alternatives where gamers contribute to the industry’s growth while having a say in it.

Ajuna Network is a decentralized gaming platform that delivers real value to gamers, without compromising on gameplay.
It makes the world’s leading development engines — Unity and Unreal — fully integrated with the world of blockchain-based in-game assets. Now gamers don’t have to choose between real value and real games — Ajuna gives them both.
Real Value: Gamers can own their in-game virtual assets, and protect and control their functionality through a public and decentralized blockchain. Never again will their hard-earned weapons, clothing and items be rendered worthless by the decisions of game company executives.
Real Games: Ajuna games can be created with industry-leading development platforms, while latency is massively reduced by running game engines in powerful, off-chain trusted execution environments (TEEs) linked to the Polkadot blockchain network.
