🗓 End of last week, a new update of the protocol was released on our Kusama parachain. From now on, all decisions on the Integritee network on Kusama will require coin voting. 💪

May Happenings: Decentralization, international events, virtual worlds & much more

*At Integritee, we believe in an ethos of decentralization — both in terms of the technical operation of our network and its governance. Last week, we took two important steps towards this goal by introducing coin voting and removing the SUDO pallet on our Kusama parachain.*

### Background — Governance in the DotSama Ecosystem

Governance and [voting mechanisms](https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/learn-governance#mechanism) are a key features of the “DotSama” ecosystem, a collective term used to describe the Polkadot and Kusama networks. On each of the networks, token holders have the right to elect the governing council and to propose and vote on referendums.

These governance processes strive to strike a balance between practicality and inclusiveness. Passive token holders are represented by the council while referendums provide a simple and inclusive vehicle for a more direct form of governance. While the council has the power to propose and vet ideas, all changes to the protocol must be ratified by a public referendum.

Voting is stake-weighted, meaning that a voter’s preference is given more or less weight depending on the number of tokens and the length of time they are willing to bond. Collectively, these governance mechanisms provide a way for the network to evolve gradually with the consent of stakeholders.

### Towards the Decentralization of Integritee

For Integritee, it has always been our aim to work towards decentralization, both by distributing the TEER token as widely as possible and by introducing coin voting procedures.

Last week, runtime update V22 was released on our Kusama parachain. From now on, all changes to the parachain will require the approval of TEER token holders through coin voting. TEER holders can participate in the governance of Integritee by proposing and voting on referendums.

### Voting on Referendums and Proposals

TEER holders will now be able to propose and vote on changes and enhancements to the Integritee network on Kusama. This will work the same way as voting for proposals and referendums on the main Kusama network, but you will use TEER rather than KSM to cast your vote. As a TEER holder, you can view and participate in active referendums and proposals on our [polkadot.js page](https://polkadot.js.org/apps/?rpc=wss%3A%2F%2Fkusama.api.integritee.network#/democracy).

### SUDO has been removed from our parachain

In another important step towards decentralization, Integritee’s SUDO pallet has now been removed. The SUDO pallet, which granted superuser privileges to the Integritee team during the initial setup phase of our parachain, is no longer required. The decision to remove SUDO was the first key vote decided by TEER holders. The vote was [conducted last week](https://polkadot.js.org/apps/?rpc=wss%3A%2F%2Fkusama.api.integritee.network#/explorer/query/0x4059192f9550f24a8596a562c04eb92752c187e0dd611ddda3c950b1aea7b6ee) and ended shortly after 10am on Wednesday May 25.

Overall, the update to runtime V22 on [block 285,145](https://polkadot.js.org/apps/?rpc=wss%3A%2F%2Fkusama.api.integritee.network#/explorer/query/0x4059192f9550f24a8596a562c04eb92752c187e0dd611ddda3c950b1aea7b6ee) is an important milestone on the road to full decentralization of the Integritee Network. ### **Next: Decentralization of the Integritee Network collators**

[Collators](https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/learn-collator) are full nodes on both a parachain and the Relay Chain. They collect parachain transactions and produce state transition proofs for the validators on the Relay Chain. They can also send and receive messages from other parachains using XCMP.

The aim is to decentralize the collator set and spread it across different reliable and independent parties, to fully decentralize the operation of the Integritee Network parachain.

Integritee Completes 2 Key Milestones Towards Decentralization

What if your identity was suddenly stolen by criminals and used for fraud schemes? That’s what happened to the sensitive private information of [24 million](https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/us-seizes-ssndob-market-for-selling-personal-info-of-24-million-people/) people in the US.

Earlier this month, the SSNOB marketplace — an illegal data market — was taken down by the authorities, according to a recent article from Bleeping Computer. It is estimated that the personal data of 24 million U.S. citizens has been compromised, and is now forever in the hands of criminals. The FBI, the IRS, the Department of Justice, and the Cyprus Police recently took down said marketplace for selling highly sensitive personal data, including social security numbers.

The problem with data being stolen is that it can easily be replicated and once it is stolen, it is out in the open forever. With prices of around 0.50 USD per person, criminals can easily obtain large quantities of personal data. Some transactions on the marketplace exceeded 100,000 USD, which shows us that criminals are eager to pay for your private data and use it for nefarious activities like fraud schemes.

Bleeping Computer concludes, based on information provided by [Advanced Intel](https://www.advintel.io/), that the stolen data was mostly sourced from breached healthcare and hospital databases, which keep highly sensitive information. Unfortunately, those organizations generally lack the expertise and resources to keep their data protected.

## **The importance of data protection**

This case highlights, once again, the urgency of secure data storage and processing mechanisms. Integritee provides the digital infrastructure for businesses and organizations to prevent these harmful breaches. It does so utilizing Intel’s trusted execution environments (TEEs) and the power of blockchain technology. Integritee does not only offer the benefits of industry-leading hardware security used by the largest cloud providers: it combines it with the benefits of decentralization and blockchain technology.

While mass adoption of blockchain technology has yet to take up among established industries, Integritee’s technology is able to offer these services with predictable and low fees, high throughput, and very low latency compared to other blockchain solutions while preserving privacy and integrity of data.

How can Integritee help prevent fraud schemes?

Zurich, Switzerland — June 30, 2022 — The XCM integration of Integritee and Moonriver has been completed: xcTEER is now live and [available on Moonriver](https://apps.moonbeam.network/moonriver).

Once deposited on Moonriver as xcTEER (an XC-20 representation of TEER), the token can be used across Moonriver’s active DeFi ecosystem. The XC-20 format allows Substrate-based tokens to be used like ERC-20s within Moonriver’s EVM environment.

The integration welcomes the movement of fungible tokens from one parachain to the other, meaning users will, for the first time, be able to hold — and exchange — xcTEER in an Ethereum-syle H160 address within Metamask.

Integritee uses the Polkadot Relay Chain as a security layer while leveraging hardware-based trusted execution environments (TEE) to enable confidential data processing. June Milestones: Kraken listing, Talking at Polkadot Decoded & More!

**Here’s what you need to know about XCM integrations**. XCM integrations are already happening all over the Polkadot & Kusama universe. But what is this acronym and what does it stand for? Here’s an explainer of what it does and why is it so important for Integritee and the ecosystem we’re in.

In layman’s terms, it can be said that XCM — cross-consensus messaging — is a universal language that enables different systems to speak to each other. It is supposed to be general enough to be widely used across growing ecosystems such as Polkadot. Even if a said system doesn’t fully comprehend the entire message, it is expected that some of those elements are “readable”.

It represents a new era of communication between parachains. Among (many) other things, Polkadot is designed to support and link projects, so it’s fair to say communication is key. These projects — parachains — are connected to the Relay Chain — Polkadot’s L0 security chain.

Kusama — Polkadot’s Canary network — follows the same structure. Integritee is one of such parachains on Kusama, and the XCM’s main function is to link parachains together so they become interoperable. These connections open up a whole new world of possibilities for Polkadot, Kusama, and its parachains in terms of functions and offers, as they enable different projects to leverage each other’s singularities.

## **Main advantages**

There is already a high degree of communicability within the system, but the goal is to keep going and have a completely interoperable network where projects can benefit from each other’s characteristics.

XCM is very useful for networks looking for more reach and exposure. Being listed on major platforms, or having their token available on other networks are just two of the advantages. Some integrations are made for specific purposes, like enabling the use of unique technology or application from a certain network. The XCM integration between Integritee and Moonbeam has been completed. ## **But how?**

It’s important to understand that XCM is different from XCMP: the first is a language, and the latter is the messaging protocol itself, which actually allows messages to be sent between parachains. This cross-consensus messaging format enables information to be passed on from one parachain to the other through an HRMP channel. In some cases, this channel is bidirectional (between parachains), and in others, unidirectional (from a specific parachain to the other).

Integration is made once both parachains finalize all the technical steps. Some integrations on Polkadot and Kusama have already been completed, and more are expected to come, including with Integritee. These links are vital for the whole ecosystem, as it’s supposed to be interoperable and able to communicate internally.

## **Why don’t we just stick to the traditional messaging format?**

This is still possible, but it is much more time-consuming and tiresome when compared to XCM. Different chains speak different languages, so traditional communication between parachains means a system would have to learn different languages when wanting to send the same message to several parachains.

Obtaining a Polkadot slot will play a vitally important role in providing the stable infrastructural basis necessary to attract enterprise clients and bolster the value of TEER. This post discusses Integritee’s rationale for participating in the Polkadot parachain auctions.*

## **Significant progress since securing Kusama parachain**

In January, thanks to tremendous support from thousands of crowdloan supporters and community members, we achieved our roadmap milestone of securing a Kusama parachain slot. This was not just a proud moment for the entire Integritee team, it also played a significant role in the technical development of the network.

Our Kusama parachain has served as the perfect basis to test, refine and optimize Integritee’s services in an environment with real economic incentives. In recent months, we have achieved a number of important technical milestones. ## **Polkadot — the next step**

In light of all this progress, how does Integritee further develop and grow from here? In the coming weeks, we are participating in the Polkadot auctions to secure a parachain slot for Integritee.

While Kusama is a canary network perfect for innovation and experimentation, Polkadot is like Kusama’s more mature big sister. As a result, a Polkadot parachain is a key prerequisite to fully scaling the Integritee network, onboarding enterprise clients, and thereby underpinning the value of TEER, our native utility token.

## **Polkadot Crowdloan Campaign**

As with Kusama, we launched a crowdloan campaign to fund our Polkadot bid. Our participation began July 11 for Slot 22. Crowdloan backers can support Integritee by staking DOT. In return, we are offering an attractive package of TEER rewards to our crowdloan supporters. So why is it called a “crowdloan” and not a “crowdfund”? ## **Benefits of Web 2.0**

Web 2.0 can be characterized as private and centralized, which was a huge step from the first version of the online world, as it became possible for people to communicate instead of just receiving information. Putting it simply, web 1.0 was designed for information consumption; web 2.0 was made for interaction and web3 aims to provide users with consumption, interaction, production, and governance power. The term “Web 2.0” was coined by the American company, O’Reilly Media in the late 2000s to distinguish the then-new era from web 1.0. One can say Web 1.0 was a stationary model that didn’t allow communication between users. Web 2.0 revolutionized the world because it brought interaction into the equation, enabling communication between users and the information in the network.

Web 1.0’s pages were stationary, a unilateral communication so to say. Web 2.0 featured the start of a relationship between the information, and different users in the network through databases. Good examples that fit this era are search engines like Google, and social media platforms such as Facebook.

Being able to exchange information and chat in real-time was one of its biggest achievements. You might remember mIRC and MSN Messenger, two very popular online chats that connected the whole world from the end of the 1990s on. According to Nielsen/NetRatings, mIRC was among the Top 10 most used applications in 2003. After that came Facebook, Instagram, and thousands of other interactive channels, like team chats for teams and video games. However, these were all owned and managed by private companies. Users become members and adhere to a set of pre-determined rules.

## **Raising questions**

Web 2.0 was an incredible milestone that opened up countless doors. And sure, this was great, but people started questioning the higher powers that control the world’s most popular internet applications and platforms. **Is our privacy really being respected? Is our data securely stored?** Are the established rules and restrictions protecting us, or platforms and clouds we use on a daily basis? Raising these questions was what probably gave birth to web3 — and what drives it even today: the need for individuals and the private sector (companies, enterprises, and corporations) to improve privacy and data safety. Developers, entrepreneurs, and investors are building a truly free, and transparent internet. Let’s see how!

## **The Web3 (r)evolution**

Web3 is better described as the next generation of the internet (the good old World Wide Web) that’s interactive, public, and decentralized. The term web3 first came up in 2014 and was coined by Ethereum’s co-founder, Gavin Wood, soon made popular by cryptocurrency enthusiasts and followers, and investors.

We can say web3 is based on blockchain technology, which is not a difficult concept to grasp once you understand [how online information storage is done](https://www.cloudwards.net/how-cloud-storage-works/). Companies and individuals have stored data on their computers and servers. Some deploy security measures, and others don’t, but anyone can easily become a victim of hacking and other cybercrimes.

Simply put, blockchain technology is a more secure way to store and manage data. Imagine a (virtual) block of information. Once it’s full, a new one is created, and so on. A blockchain can be made of several blocks which can’t be reordered or tampered with. This is one of its main advantages since it stores — and provides if needed — data that no one can edit or delete. It is often called a digital ledger with the added benefit of being immutable. Now imagine you could have all the benefits of web 2.0 without having to answer to a higher power. Well, that’s what web3 offers: a safer, faster, and more secure internet.

The idea of web3 is to enable the development and establishment of DApps (decentralized applications) with blockchain technology, which is managed by its users instead of corporations thus eliminating the threat of command. Web3 seems to be the most democratic system of them all when you look at its structure. Every transaction that goes in the blocks has to be approved by multiple participants.

## **Web 2.0 vs. Web3: What changes?**

In truth, it’s not really about shifting from one to the other altogether but more about merging both — at least at an early stage. Web3’s biggest appeal is the fact that it aims to be decentralized and trustless. But what does that mean? While sites like Wikipedia, Facebook, and Instagram are owned and managed by private corporations, the projects on web3 are supposed to be overseen and governed by its users. In this case, to be trustless and permissionless is a good thing: blockchain technology doesn’t require support or governing from third parties.

Cryptography and coding aside, blockchain technology will be extremely useful and beneficial in the near future. The most known use-case for it is decentralized finance (DeFi) such as cryptocurrency, but there are countless industries and areas where blockchain technology can become paramount. From Web 2.0 to Web3: A Step Forward

The heat wave wasn’t the only thing raising the temperature at Integritee this July! Our team had its hands full completing integrations with other projects, running a crowdloan campaign for a slot on Polkadot — and succeeding! — and preparing juicy articles to help everyone understand the world of blockchain. ## **The start of something great: Getting a parachain on Polkadot**

First and foremost, we want to share that Integritee is the winner of the 24th Polkadot slot at the 23rd parachain auction! In order to do so, we started a crowdloan campaign to promote our community’s participation. Thanks to the contributions of 1,215 people who pitched more than 100,000 DOT, we were able to secure a parachain on Polkadot for the lease periods 9–16. Partnering with Bifrost was also key for this crowdloan. [Bifrost](https://bifrost-finance.medium.com/bifrost-salp-supports-integritee-polkadot-crowdloan-1c892011303b) cooperated with us to help our crowdloan participants access liquid derivatives of staked DOT. This is yet another milestone for Integritee, as it offers us more space and tools to break new grounds and grow. Securing a parachain on Polkadot has always been part of our roadmap, and an important way to reach one of our goals: to become a multi-environment network using the same token, TEER. What happened in July: Winning a Slot on Polkadot, Integrating with Karura & Much More

*We are releasing a series of articles explaining the nature and mechanics behind blockchain technology. In this article, you’ll learn about the basics surrounding the underlying concept, including its main features.*

A blockchain is a digital set of sequentially connected blocks that work as a ledger, recording information. There are some major differences between a blockchain and a traditional paperback ledger or Excel sheet. One of the first and most well-known use cases of blockchain technology is cryptocurrency. But what made it so popular and why are so many institutions and companies adopting it? Let’s dive into the main features of blockchain.

* **Immutable** — No one can modify the information saved on a blockchain. It cannot be edited or deleted. The records on a blockchain are permanent and unchangeable, meaning no one can tamper with the information — contrary to traditional ledgers.
* **Distributed** — Everyone with access to the network can access its information, leading to total transparency.
* **Decentralized** — Blockchains are accessible and managed by dispersed network participants and therefore decentralized by design. Thus, blockchains are neither governed nor controlled by a sole person or entity. Traditional systems, such as social media platforms, public and private institutions, etc., are centralized, so information (namely, transaction records) is usually controlled and managed by a single entity. This means that users have very little or no power at all over it.
* **Secure** — If you look at a transaction on a blockchain, the only thing you’ll find is a line of letters and numbers all mixed together. In cryptography, this is called a hash — a unique ID number, almost impossible to tamper with. Each transaction has its own unique hash.
* **Dependent on consensus** — Processing transactions and creating new blocks in a blockchain needs consensus from the network. Different projects use different consensus protocols. Proof-of-stake (PoS) and proof-of-work (PoW) of two of them. The latter relies on different nodes (machines, not people) communicating with each other and reaching an agreement through an algorithm. They do not necessarily have to trust each other to agree on the information provided. All they have to trust is the algorithm. PoS is based on staking: cryptocurrency owners are responsible for validating block transactions by staking tokens — which is different from just chipping in. When someone stakes tokens, it means they’re committing coins without actually losing them.
* **Efficient** — Take logistics, supply chain, or even broader areas such as medical aid. Time-consuming processes and hierarchic approvals are eliminated from the process because everything becomes automated. Having the information streamlined in one single centralized ledger makes processes faster, thus more efficient.

All these features are linked and powerful when combined. Blockchain will become an integral part of many future solutions as a protocol layer or technology. From transaction of goods to confidential computing, there is an on-chain world to explore — the off-chain being the real world, so to speak.

The concept of blockchain was first introduced by scientists Stuart Haber and Scott Stornetta in the early 1990s, described as a chain of blocks secured by cryptography. However, its practical implementation only happened in 2009, with Bitcoin. The world has made great progress since then, though. This is an ever-evolving universe, for it’s essential to keep growing in order to fit different narratives and use-cases. In theory, it’s possible to do almost everything with blockchain and some of those ideas are already being put into practice. From decentralized exchanges to medical aid, blockchain has countless applications.

## **The beauty of transparency**

It’s important to grasp the concept of “auditability” to understand the ramifications of blockchain. To do an audit is to verify that something is running how it should. Audits are a common practice when money is involved, and they’re usually performed by an external party. Now, what if all members of a network were able to verify the data transactions of the said network?

This is basically what happens with blockchains. Depending on the underlying protocol and security logic, a blockchain is auditable and verifiable by nature, eliminating the need for trust — in a higher power such as an institution or enterprise.

## **Verifiable Privacy at Scale**

It’s great that users are able to verify if their data is being managed and stored as promised. But what about confidentiality, a feature so much in demand nowadays too? Companies need access to their customers’ and clients’ data, but privacy is still something that should be respected. Integritee does exactly that: enables access and insight into important data without compromising the sensitive bits.

Our solutions put together the trust of blockchain technology — trustworthy and public by default — the confidentiality of Trusted Execution Environments (TEE) — which ensures the proper storage and management of sensitive data — and the scalability offered by sidechains. If you’ve contributed to our Polkadot crowdloan, you are entitled to TEER tokens. The amount you’ll receive depends on our rewards structure. Learn how to check your TEER rewards.*

Thanks to the 1215 supporters that pitched in more than 108,000 DOT, we were able to secure Polkadot’s 24th slot during the 23rd parachain auction. Our team has been busy getting everything ready for the next phase. This includes distributing TEER rewards to our crowdloan backers.

## **Crowdlender rewards in detail**

All TEER rewards will be released on August 23rd, 2022, and unlocked automatically, block by block, throughout the lease period. At the end of it (July 3, 2024), all DOT contributions will be returned. 2. Navigate to the Accounts section and click the Accounts subsection. All your accounts will appear.
3. Go to your polkadot.js extension, identify the account you’ve used for the crowdloan, and on the three dots icon, change the ‘allow use on any chain’.
4. Change the network you’re viewing: click the arrow beside Accounts, choose Integritee Network (under Kusama), and hit Switch.
5. You can now see your TEER rewards, including what’s transferrable and what’s locked. The latter will be vested over the lease period.

Integritee’s Polkadot Crowdloan: How & Where to Check Your Rewards

Two major projects utilizing TEE-Technology are teaming up to bring the full potential of TEEs to the blockchain space.

We’re excited to announce that we are partnering with [Crust Network](https://crust.network/), a decentralized storage protocol based on IPFS. Crust Network will provide us with exclusive Web3 infrastructure, full technical support, and operational and maintenance services.

[Integritee Network](https://integritee.network/) combines the trust of a public ledger with the confidentiality of Trusted Execution Environments (TEE), a special-purpose hardware inside which computations run securely, confidentially — and fully verifiable with the decentralized attestation service: The Attesteer.

By integrating the decentralized attestation service, Crust users will be able to verify IPFS-based decentralized data storage for their applications and seamlessly pull that data from IPFS. Crust is using TEEs as well, which opens up more possibilities for cooperation between the two parties. Both Crust and Integritee will co-serve the Metaverse scenario in the near future with confidential data processing and confidential data storage.
