At Astar, we are deeply rooted in the Japanese market. Yet, it can be hard at times to gain insights into what’s happening in it from the outside. That’s why we decided to introduce you to some real people working in the space in Japan and what their experiences have been like.

If you joined our NFTs in Japan space, you might be familiar with the person whose story we’re sharing in this post. Wailoaloa, short Wai, whose real name is Jack, has been in and out of crypto for years.

Despite not getting their appeal initially, it was ultimately understanding NFTs and meeting the right people that got him involved full-time.

**Getting into crypto**

10 years ago, Wai was still working as a journalist with a deep interest in tech. It was only natural that he learned about Bitcoin early on and even started accumulating a good amount through mining. What attracted him most was that Bitcoin sat right at the intersection of Finance and Tech.

However, after a big argument with his brother, who thoroughly convinced him that Bitcoin was a bad idea and he should stop messing around with it, he deleted all his wallets and didn’t engage too closely anymore. Nevertheless, he always remained interested in digital money.

> *“If this argument had never happened, who knows, I might have been retired by now,”* he adds jokingly.

**The explosion of ICOs**

For a while, the most exciting things happening in crypto were forks (for example, during the Blocksize wars) of Bitcoin or iterations like Litecoin, which then would be forked to give birth to memes like Doge. This changed with the launch of Ethereum, which brought the ability to create smart contracts and compute them in a distributed manner. A major use case of it turned out to be so-called ICOs, initial coin offerings. During an ICO, investors would send Ether to a smart contract, which would then send them a different token back - the one they invested in.

It was during that time that Jack got together with his engineering friends to write research papers that would explain what all those projects were doing - an early introduction to concepts like multi-party computation and zero-knowledge proofs.

> *“With a bunch of friends, we were digging into projects, and they’d write very technical papers. I’d then take that and clarify it for anyone who wasn’t a blockchain engineer to send out as research papers and newsletters.”*

By October 2018, over 800 teams had raised roughly $20 billion using this method, many of whom never delivered even their first product. Needless to say that the ICO bubble crashed, and many of these tokens trended toward zero.

> *“It was interesting to observe how we went from exchanges and projects spending lavishly on massive events to the next year only small crowds of real enthusiasts gathering. That was my first time on the rollercoaster, and I eventually fell off.”*

**NFTs evoking the spirit of the old internet**

In 2021, NFTs started taking off. Even though Wai still considered himself a crypto finance guy, he figured it wouldn’t hurt to take a quick look at this technology. He joined the Friends with Benefits DAO his friend Devin (also a Galverse founder) had been raving about. It was in the middle of the pandemic, and he ended up spending hours in this community where there was just a great vibe and a lot of creative energy.

> *“It took me back to the roots of the internet. The times when I’d jump in on a chat room or forum after school. It really was a very social experience.”*

He also highlights that the first community in NFTs/web3 you get into will often define your experience. For him, FWB was a great place to start as there were a lot of creatives where the talk wasn’t purely speculative, but the vibes were nerdy and funny.

**Friends with Benefits** is a crypto social club, a token-gated community dedicated to fostering creativity and culture using web3\. It has been compared to a decentralized Soho House and includes renowned artists and musicians.

Spending a lot of time around these web3 creatives also changed his mind about NFTs. He started understanding that they can be seen as a *“Gateway to the rest of web3*” and an intersection of culture, tech, and finance.

While crypto so far had been dominated (still is) by men and fairly mono-cultural, NFTs brought in more creatives, and to Wai, it became clear that they could become a great driver of adoption through culture.

> *“While engineers are great at building things, they can end up building for themselves rather than for other real humans. Artists are naturally good at explaining the things they do and cater to others”*

In a short amount of time, Wai became a full NFT Degen - minting a lot of NFTs that ended up going to zero, but considering it part of the experience.

**Going full-time NFTs**

While Wai was minting art and derivatives, Emi Kusano inadvertently kicked off a wave of NFTs in Japan. She had already experimented with blockchain before, putting one of her music videos on-chain.

However, it was her son who’d become the reason the Galverse team came together. Her son had seen the news about a kid in the UK making money by selling NFTs. So he decided it was something he could do as part of his school art project:[ Zombie Zoo](https://www.zombiezookeeper.com/) was born.

The pixelated animals caught the eyes of some FWB members, and this is how Devin (Wai’s friend from earlier) learned about them. He reached out to Emi to discuss doing something more at the edge with them, such as composable NFTs. Emi’s son didn’t want anyone interfering with his art project, so composable zombies didn’t happen.

But, Emi and Devin were set on making a project. Emi’s friend Ayaka was a traditionally trained cel animator, and through the pandemic, they’d traded ideas of making their own anime after making a short music video together. It was an impossible dream in the regular anime industry - it’s expensive to make, and there are strict power structures and publishing routes which make it hard for a newcomer to create an IP.

Crowdfunding through NFTs was a new way to approach the industry, though. Ayaka started working on the art. Emi kicked off the creative and business side. Devin took the lead on tech and design. And when it came to building a community and marketing it, Devin reached out to Wai.

Seeing the designs, Wai was immediately on-board. A huge anime lover himself, the art evoked a nostalgic feel. He literally told them during one of their first calls that:

> *“I won’t have to work very hard because the art is so amazing; it’ll sell itself.”*

Indeed, the art wasn’t just amazing, but it also contained well over [2,000 traits pushing the system they used to the limits](https://bueno.art/blog/shinsei-galverse-bueno) and also making it challenging to algorithmically generate traits. Wai and his team spent countless hours manually fixing gals.

In April of the next year, Galverse launched and became a success trending at #1 on the OpenSea page for a few days after launch. It’s still one of the most successful projects to come out of Japan and gather international attention.

**On building community**

One area that Wai oversees is the community. As a previous degen, he had seen many hyped projects with a short shelf life. Hype eventually died down, and people lost interest. However, with the Galverse team the NFTs were just the start of a bigger vision, so building a supportive community was key.

> *“We were very intentional about building community. We didn’t spend money on ads or influencers. Ultimately, it’s the members who make the culture, but we set standards early on. For example, we had a bot to send new members reminders that we were not a ‘Waifu’ project focused on objectifying our characters if they started leaning that way. And for those who wanted to talk about floor price, we sent them to the broom-closet”*

The team took a lot of inspiration from happier places in NFTs, such as the Crypto Coven and the Friends with Benefits Discords, who all had managed to establish communities that weren’t there only for the money, but friendly places that became a place to set up your home base in web3.

**Making an anime**

One of the most exciting parts of Galverse is that they are making an anime. Wai is a key part of the process and has met a lot of legendary anime studios and producers. In a sense, many of these legends were visionaries pushing boundaries in their own right.

When they met the producer of Cowboy Bebop, he told them that when initially pitching their concept, they were laughed out of the room because Cowboys, in space, and Jazz?! No one would want to watch that!

> “These iconic anime make a lot of sense in hindsight - I grew up with them, and loved them from the moment I watched them, so I’d never really thought about the challenge of getting that kind of concept made in the production committee system you find in the Japanese anime industry.”

After an exhaustive search to find animators that understood the Galverse vision - and could fit their schedule - they finally struck a deal with a studio to make their own anime. For Wai, NFTs make a lot of sense in the context of Anime, an industry dominated by a few huge publishers, where studios are often booked for years. He sees it as a *“Kickstarter for creative projects that otherwise would never be created.”*

> *“I don’t think there’d be any other way to make something like Galverse. Just like Cowboys - Jazz - Space, Ayaka and Emi’s trope-smashing dream of badass Gals - sci-fi - action - fashion would probably never make it through a production committee’s process.”*

**Tips and recommendations**

We finished our chat with a few tips and recommendations for those looking to explore NFTs.

* **Artists:** The best way for artists to see if NFTs make sense for them is to mess around with the tech. Set a certain budget for gas, mint an NFT, and send it to a friend or to another wallet of yours and back. *“The first time I really understood the power of the blockchain was when I could observe a transaction go through without any intermediary party,"* Wai explained. Another part of experimenting can be purchasing an NFT from another artist. This will make it easier to understand that feeling of attachment you develop, as well as the value ascribed to some of these works.
* **Collectors:** Buy art that you like. Don’t necessarily expect it to make you money. There are some communities that are friendlier for newbies than others. If you have a specific interest in things like Anime, Galverse is a great place to go, as they provide insights into the process of making an anime. Similarly, other NFT communities enable you to be part of co-creation, such as StoryCo.
* **Any project:** *“Don’t overcomplicate things. It’s better to have a very clear message. It also facilitates onboarding.”* If people can immediately understand the value they gain from purchasing the NFT, that drastically reduces hurdles and makes it a lot easier to market.

While Wai started as an NFT degen, nowadays, he is very occupied with project managing the Galverse anime, sitting through very long meetings in Japanese, keeping the Galverse community thriving, and working on VTuber upgrades for gals that he doesn’t find as much time to degen. Nevertheless, he closely follows what’s happening in space and is very excited about developments such as[ ERC-6551, a token standard that essentially allows NFTs to become wallets.](https://blog.thirdweb.com/erc-6551-token-bound-accounts/)

He believes that the current market will shake out a lot of projects, but the ones who are just heads down building will remain, and we’ll see a lot of interesting creative works over the next few months.

> *“I’ve been up and down on the rollercoaster before. Web3 and NFTs will come back in some form, pushed by some new social or technological drive. It’ll look different, but it’ll always be interesting.”*

## **JBA advocating for tax cuts**

According to Benjamin Franklin, there are only two certainties in life: death and taxes. Especially for crypto startups, the latter has been a challenging territory to navigate in Japan. That’s why the [Japanese Blockchain Association, a non-governmental lobbying group for the crypto industry, is now advocating for a change in the national tax regime. ](https://jba-web.jp/news/6568)So far, crypto taxes in Japan have been notoriously high, leading startups and VCs to set up their legal entities outside of Japan not to have to pay taxes on unrealized gains.   

In addition to removing the taxation of unrealized gains, the JBA also asks the government to consider simplifying taxes on income from exchanges, as particularly remote workers would struggle with such. Lastly, the recommendations also ask for the ability to deduce losses from crypto holdings over three years. 

**Takeaway:** Crypto taxation is a significant friction point and drives companies away if more attractive alternatives exist. The current regime is not in line with the overall positive stance of Japanese policymakers towards web3 and even the PM highlighting its potential to change the internet for the better. It’s likely that we will see more changes for the better. 

## **Dentsu partnering with SUI**

Dentsu, one of the biggest advertising companies, has joined forces with Mysten Labs, the entity developing the Sui blockchain. Through its affiliate company, 3RD GEAR, Dentsu is looking to tap into Mysten Labs' expertise in the web3 space to explore the creator economy.   

Together, the parties aim to build a creator economy leveraging decentralized identities on the SUI blockchain. The creator economy describes all the economic activity creators generate, including artists, writers, streamers, gamers, and even developers. It is forecasted to continue growing in Japan thanks to new monetization models and social networking platforms. NFTs have been a primary way to connect web3 with the creator economy and will also play a major role in this collaboration. 

**Takeaway:** The creator economy has a huge impact on advertising, as the rise of influencer marketing has shown. Dentsu isn’t the first advertiser to realize the potential of web3 for its advertising business, but it’ll be interesting to see how the creator economy x advertising narrative plays out in a country that has embraced even virtual characters such as Vtubers. 

As an aside, Sui is taking its name from one of the readings of the Japanese Kanji for water: 水

## **Ponta Points are coming on-chain** 

The Japanese tech company Play!Think has partnered with one of the largest loyalty scheme operators, Loyalty Marketing, to bridge the current web2 experience to web3\. Ponta points the loyalty program in question is already used by over 112 million members and is available at over 280,000 stores. 

The partnership aims to offer web3 services to existing users, and leverage blockchain to reduce friction points for users as well as export the scheme outside of Japan. It’s expected that Play!Think’s NFT Cloak, a service that allows web2 accounts to seamlessly handle NFTs and other crypto assets, will be used to facilitate the transition. 

Furthermore, Loyalty Marketing and Play!think will create joint games and offer digital trading card games to promote their services. If they succeed and onboard a majority of existing users to web3, this could quickly grow into one of the most successful web3 loyalty programs.   

**Takeaway:** The Japanese loyalty market is expected to continue growing to a size of 15936.7 million by 2026 offering huge potential for any web3 provider to capture interest and provide the right infrastructure to unify a fragmented landscape of points. Web3 also aids in expansion abroad, which seems to be the next step for loyalty programs, as [Rakuten has showcased when partnering with Marriot. ](https://global.rakuten.com/corp/news/update/2021/1202%5F01.html)

Japan Web3 Roundup: JBA advocating tax cuts, Dentsu x SUI, and Loyalty points moving on-chain

The newly proposed tokenomics present some changes aimed at driving the long-term success and sustainability of the Astar network ecosystem. The primary alterations in this model, compared to the previous one, focus on dynamically adjusting the rate of ASTR emissions, in part by introducing burn mechanisms, and to achieve greater balance and alignment of incentives between builders and stakers participating in the dApp staking system, even as the network grows.

One of the key strategies of the new model is the deliberate increase in the portion of block emissions allocated to dApp builders — which creates a more consistent reward structure across different tiers of dApps, that also scale as they grow. This focus recognizes the important role that dApp builders play in the Astar ecosystem.

For collators and the treasury, the model proposes a reduction in the portion of new emissions allocated to them with a fixed amount. This reduction ensures a more equitable distribution of resources within the system, striking a balance between incentivizing participants and promoting growth.

Besides the already existing transaction fee burning, an extra burn mechanism is being introduced to bolster emissions reduction within the proposed model. This mechanism targets tokens that cannot be used effectively, including fee burn and block reward burn. By effectively reducing the ASTR emissions rate, the burn mechanism plays an important role in the new model, in part by removing incentives from circulation when they haven’t been allocated effectively but also by reducing the dilution of value.

The new tokenomics model also introduces a fee model that harmonizes Native and EVM fees, and includes a transitional implementation scheme to prevent fee shock during the rollout phase.

In summary, the Astar Tokenomics 2.0 model attempts to create a stronger foundation for long-term growth and appreciation of network value through a more optimized distribution of block emissions, a dynamic inflation rate aided by burn mechanisms, and a tiered dApp staking incentive system for builders designed to grow as they do. Astar Tokenomics 2.0: driving long-term success and sustainability

While the initial development of dApps focused on the Ethereum blockchain, that quickly changed as alternative ecosystems were launched, offering different approaches to solving the blockchain trilemma.

Nowadays, when building an application, one of the questions developers will have to ask themselves is how to face the plethora of existing web3 blockchain ecosystems that often don’t naturally communicate with each other. Or, put another way, lack interoperability.

The most common approaches are Multi-chain and Cross-chain development.

## **What does multichain mean?**

When speaking of multichain dApps, we refer to applications that are running on different blockchains. For example, countless DeFi protocols in the Ethereum ecosystem have recently started creating instances of their apps on top of Layer 2s.

In practice, for developers, multichain means having to write various smart contracts for different chains and deploy them over multiple chains. This leads to capital inefficiency as liquidity now spreads across chains and increases friction as users have to switch between networks manually.

The lack of interoperability between native blockchains means that each contract has to manage its own state, making the development of a multichain dApp expensive. Additionally, you introduce risk by having separate contracts manage data which could lead to inconsistencies and eventually result in errors.

Nevertheless, there are benefits as well, such as tapping into the community of different ecosystems and leveraging their tech features. Additionally, security might be higher than when building cross-chain dApps.

## **What is Cross-chain?**

Unlike multichain dApps, cross-chain apps have a single unified instance that users interface with. While cross-chain dApps consist of smart contracts on separate networks, what users see is one app. This is similar to how centralized exchanges enable anyone to move assets seamlessly between ecosystems without having to worry about switching networks or wrapping assets.

A big advantage of cross-chain architecture is that it removes silos between chains and makes all data, liquidity, and business logic composable with each other.

Cross-chain apps ensure that smart contracts, even when deployed on different chains, stay in sync to support their use case. One of the most common cross-chain applications are bridges which enable users to move assets across different chains.

Bridges implement different mechanisms to help assets move, such as:

* **Lock and mint:** When moving asset A from chain A to asset A on chain B, instead of actually moving the asset across a chain, the cross-chain protocol will lock token A on one chain and issue the user with a wrapped instance of the token on chain B. This means assets are not actually moving chains.
* **Burn and mint:** Similar to the above, with the difference that assets are burned on one chain before being minted on the other.
* **Liquidity Pools**: Instead of locking, bridges host liquidity pools that enable users to use assets on a different chain.

However, bridges have proven to be a constant target of hackers, and it’s not surprising that the top 5 DeFi hacks all were bridge hacks, as securing bridges is difficult because they tend to have central points of failure, such as multi-sig setup. Vitalik Buterin has also pointed out that increased interdependencies introduced this way could create *“systemic contagion threatening the entire ecosystem.”* [*(Src)*](https://thedefiant.io/vitalik-eth-cross-chain-bridges-security)

Other cross-chain applications are oracles that supply different ecosystems with reliable streams of data or indexing services such as The Graph.

## **Multichain vs. Cross-chain**

The biggest difference between the two is the ability to communicate between different blockchains. In a typical multichain scenario, there is no communication between the instances of apps on different chains. Cross-chain, on the other hand, removes the barriers between silo’d chains but comes with increased risk.

Ultimately, multichain approaches might be inherently safer as each blockchain maintains its own validator set and security. In contrast, building a cross-chain solution is more straightforward and potentially lowers the friction for users. Fortunately, neither approach is mutually exclusive. For example, multi-chain dApps can connect with cross-chain bridges to still communicate with other chains. Or one develops in an ecosystem that is structured to support multichain while enabling chains to communicate, such as Polkadot.

## **Multichain in the Context of Astar**

Astar is a parachain in the Polkadot ecosystem. Built by one of the creators of Ethereum, Polkadot is an ecosystem of multiple chains (parachains) connected by an underlying blockchain - the relay chain.

This architecture allows for parachains to focus on their respective use cases while inheriting security and decentralization from the relay chain. Polkadot was built based on the belief that the future of web3 is connected networks and not siloed chains. That’s one of the reasons we built Astar as a parachain.

When building on Astar, developers can create multichain dApps that can communicate with other chains in Polkadot thanks to XCM channels.

**XCM**

XCM is short for cross-consensus messages and is one of the superpowers of any parachain. It defines what kind of data can be transferred between chains and how they should interpret it. It enhances interoperability and opens up new levels of interactions. Unlike bridges,[ XCM supports the transfer of rich data ](https://docs.astar.network/docs/xcm/)so you can move any data between chains in a trustless, secure, and programmable manner - opening up the creation of multichain smart contracts, nft transfers, daos spanning chains, and the ability to pay fees between chains in any token.

For this post looking at NFTs from a human perspective, we had a chat with Yuya Yoshida, the CEO of HARTi, a Japanese NFT infrastructure startup, who shared how he got involved in crypto and what he thinks will further propel this space.

First things first...

## Who is Yuya anyway?

Yuya is the CEO of HARTi, and what you’d call a serial entrepreneur. He started his first company at 19 and has never worked in a traditional corporate environment. He describes himself as an artist at heart, which has a big influence on his business and the industry he’s in.

When he was 6 years old, Yuya started learning calligraphy and perfected his art enough to get a teacher's license. He also did exhibitions all over the world, including in Africa. For a while, he was focused on his career as an artist but eventually became interested in the intersection of art and business.

Back then (and still to this day), Japan’s art market pales in comparison to the size of its economy. During his studies of art management in London, he gained a better understanding of how art functioned as an industry and then took those insights back with him to Japan.

## The beginning of HARTi and the transition to web3

HARTi didn’t start as a web3 company. Instead,it was, first and foremost, a startup in the art industry. In 2019, art started booming in Japan, with more contemporary artists gaining recognition abroad and Japanese exploring museums and galleries. During that time, Yuya was managing a gallery in Roppongi, connecting influencers with artworks. However, later that year, the impact of Covid hit galleries.

Soon after, NFTs started trending, and along with that trend, Yuya decided to bring HARTi from the realm of physical art into the world of web3 and NFTs. He quickly realized that NFTs were still early but had a lot of potential. Yet they were held back by the fragmented user experience involving having to set up wallets, purchase cryptocurrencies, and connect to NFT marketplaces.

That’s why he built an app that would combine all of these points into one. With HARTi, users can purchase NFTs easily, combining an EVM wallet and marketplace in one. Additionally, the app includes social functions removing the need for a separate platform like Discord to host communities.

## Why Web3 and art?

Having worked in the art industry, Yuya is very aware of some of the challenges the industry is facing. He believes that in its current state, there aren’t the right incentives for art galleries and auction houses to change track, but web3 could pave the way for much-needed change.

Galleries aren’t just curators, but in their business model, close to brokers who initiate deals between sellers, and buyers of art, making it a fairly opaque market where publicly available pricing data is lacking. Additionally, traditional art markets haven’t really been open to the masses but very refined to high-net-worth individuals and institutions.

Web3 has the potential to open up the market to a broader audience, fostering diversity in taste, and thanks to data being stored publicly, provide transparency in pricing.

> *“The business model in traditional art markets is fixed and has been for decades. Profit margins can be low because, for galleries, the amount of commission they can take is limited. What’s worse, for artists, even when their work is auctioned for millions of dollars, they receive nothing - it’s not rare for auction houses to keep 100%.”*

Recently, [Sotheby’s, a renowned auction house has auctioned off NFT art remaining from the collection held by the now bankrupt crypto hedgefund 3 Arrows Capital (3AC),](https://www.artnews.com/art-news/news/sothebys-three-arrows-capital-3ac-bankruptcy-nfts-auction-1234671826/) and unlike is the custom in their auctions otherwise, decided to honor royalty fees, kicking back thousands of dollars to the creators of arts.

Unfortunately, though, with NFT marketplaces focusing partly more on volume than quality art, royalties have become an optionality on platforms like Blur and Magic Eden. Yuya points out that *“royalties are essential. It’s weird when an artist doesn’t receive anything from a work that they produced.”* He also acknowledges that while royalties might be a business model for some, there are multiple ways for businesses to monetize. One he highlights is that artists could train AI on their style and use that to further monetize.

When it comes to art, he further thinks that pfps are about money and less about art. He goes as far as stating that they are purely governed by “Supply and Demand,” used to flex and not to be appreciated. As you can see, he uses a picture of himself in black and white in his Social Media Presence, not a pfp NFT.

## Working in the Japanese Market

During his time running a startup in the Japanese market, Yuya has noticed a few things that make the market different from others. For one, he shares that, in general, Japanese companies are doing very well with their existing web2 schemes. For example, loyalty programs are a big market valued at 2.1 trillion yen in 2021 ($14.6 million) that continues to grow, without much reason for companies to change their current set-up.

That’s also why one of the most frequently asked questions Yuya is confronted with tends to be *“Why NFTs?”*

The way he responds depends. *“It depends on the client. For some, I will highlight the potential efficiency gains they can achieve through automation using smart contracts and blockchain. For others, I might focus on how much data will be available to them without having to store it themselves as it’s all available on-chain and can be read.”*

Interestingly, HARTi’s clients have mostly already gone through Proofs-of-Concept and are ready to embrace NFTs more deeply. Most startups only cover one aspect of NFTs, whereas HARTi covers them all, from distribution up to providing enterprises with a CRM.

Another interesting observation Yuya shared was that, in general, the Japanese market is unique, even differing from other Asian markets. Global crypto trends are usually not reflected in Japan or play out at different timelines. And while Japan is often seen as a great place for any NFT projects surrounding IP management, he caveats that, at the moment, the Japanese IP industry is huge and very strong. Consequently, web3 companies lack the leverage to get a seat at the table. Not even big marketplaces like Rakuten are able to get licenses easily. For now, wallet numbers are too small to make it attractive for huge IP holders.

Which brings us to the next question:

## What’s missing?

According to Yuya, a few things could stir further adoption. Among them is a strong game coming out of Japan. He sees a lot of potentials, yet for now, it’s unclear which studio and chain will be able to succeed. Another point he brings up is that in Japan, the industry is very much full of geeks, and so is the marketing story.

> *“There aren’t a lot of ladies in the market; it’s all for and about geeks. I feel that we need greater diversity.”*

Yuya further believes that there is still a lack of attractive content. Real Japanese artists focus very much on perfecting their craft and not so much on Marketing, explaining the Japanese art markets stand in the lower percentile. There are also no auction houses, so a lot of the infrastructure that could back up a greater digital art boom is still being built.

## Reasons to be optimistic

Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic. HARTi has just recently entered a[ partnership with PARCO](https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000034.000042267.html), a department store chain with stores all over Japan. As part of the partnership, HARTi is taking over the Purikura photo booths in these stores as a way to distribute NFTs and enable users to NFT their memories.

They even trained an AI in the style of Purikura, so anyone can use it to turn images into Purikura-style inside of the HARTi app, embracing users' curiosity and playfulness.

*“I’m also very excited about generative AI. I just held a talk about it at a Tokyo university, and I think it could help us overcome the lack of attractive content. Obviously, in its current state, AI still feels flat on the information side, but pondering how it will evolve and how we can leverage it is exhilarating.”*

The Japanese NFT scene is still small, but startups like HARTi are bridging the gap between enterprises and web3\. With its unique culture around collectibles, as well as strong associations with innovation, fashion, and entertainment, there are reasons to be optimistic about how NFTs will evolve in Japan.

Yuya's NFT journey: Building NFT Infrastructure for the Japanese Market

## Story #1: Product Dao-velopment platform

On August 9th, Hakuhodo Key 3, a joint venture between one of the largest advertising companies and the web3 company Stake Technologies, announced the launch of a new type of product development platform called “New! Product development”.

The platform brings together loyal customers of companies with their internal teams to tap into the wisdom of crowds and develop the products that customers want to see. All of this is enabled through a DAO setup, in which customers hold NFTs granting rights to propose and vote on new product ideas. Companies can use the solution throughout the entire product lifecycle, starting at ideation all the way up to aftercare and engagement with customers using the product.

Involving customers will ensure that products align with their needs, while web3 adds transparency to an otherwise opaque process.

To launch the platform, Hakuhodo is planning to collaborate with other web3 partners, such as Astar Games, to add gamification to the process and Gaiax.

**Takeaway:** Customers’ feedback can be invaluable to companies. And their creative potential remains largely untapped. Web3 enables companies to engage more deeply with their products and contribute to nudging them in the right direction - a win-win situation.

## Story #2: Cells going onchain

If there’s one thing everyone remembers from school about cells, then it’s that mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. Otherwise, most of us probably don’t spend time thinking about cells. However, iPS cells especially bear massive potential in regenerative medicine, yet their availability is often limited.

Ailom Group, a medical company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, is set to change that with its recent partnership with the World Scan Project (not to be confused with the World Iris Scan Project, worldcoin), a provider of web3 infrastructure services. Together they will build the iCELL BANK project aimed at enhancing the availability of iPS cells by storing them in advance.

The Ailom group provides customers with its iPS cell production kit. Once these are created and stored, customers can access them as needed. NFTs will serve as certificates of ownership, and the data stored on-chain will be accessible at any time to NFT holders.

**Takeaway:** Despite the big potential at the intersection of medicine and blockchain, there has been little uptake. It’s exciting to see a pharma company working with cutting-edge recreational therapy exploring how they can leverage web3 to improve their offering.

## Story #3: Daiwa furthering crypto exploration.

Daiwa Securities, the second-largest securities brokerage in Japan, is collaborating with Pafin. Pafin launched in 2017 and is focused on enabling enterprises to automatically calculate profit and losses and manage other book-keeping needs related to crypto. Through this collaboration, Daiwa will leverage Pafin’s suite of products, including budgeting services and visualizations, to facilitate its crypto endeavors.

Already in 2020, one of Daiwa’s group companies launched the first crypto-backed loan in Japan, and last year, the group started dealing with security tokens. Daiwa believes that the web3 space has big potential once legal and tax regulations are structured in a way to foster it. They’re putting their money where their mouth is, among other things, with its venture arm that invests in fintech companies.

**Takeaway:** The security token narrative is going strong in Japan. The top 2 brokerages are already exploring security tokens, and as a more compliant and controlled vehicle, it’s easy to see their appeal to lawmakers.

More than ten years since the launch of Bitcoin, new layer-1 chains continue launching with their unique ways of addressing the Blockchain trilemma. It has become increasingly clear that the future doesn’t belong to just one ecosystem but that we’ll live in a Multichain future, where each chain has a different focus and fills a separate niche.

Interestingly, we live in a time when various Layer-1 protocols have announced a shift toward app-chain models, introducing more chains into the ecosystem.

This then raises the question of how all these chains can communicate, or put otherwise, the question of blockchain interoperability.

## What is blockchain interoperability?

In very simple terms, blockchain interoperability describes the ability of different native blockchains to interact with each other. Each team makes different design choices regarding consensus, smart contract languages, and other things in a world of multiple chains. This leads to difficulties in interacting between chains.

If you think of blockchains similar to countries, you could consider interoperability the question of speaking a shared language. Assuming English is the only language you speak when faced with someone who knows nothing but Japanese, you’ll have trouble communicating even without considering your cultural background. That’s the state of blockchain interoperability when chains aren’t interoperable.

Each blockchain could communicate and share data with other chains with true interoperability. In an ideal scenario, users would have complete freedom over moving their assets between chains, and it would be as easy as switching a tab in a browser.

## Why does interoperability matter?

As mentioned above, the main reason it matters is the existence of multiple ecosystems, each with a raison-d’etre. While there’s no way of knowing if the currently dominant ecosystems will remain so in the future, interoperability is crucial in any multichain world.

Fragmentation and incompatible chains create an experience full of friction for users and hinder the idea of the Open Web, where users can take their data and assets wherever they want. Whenever two parties interact on the same chain, things are easy. As soon as it’s different chains, things get more complicated. Moving your funds from NEAR to Astar using a bridge, for instance, is quite complex, involving various steps going via EVM. Additionally, fragmented ecosystems also reduce composability.

While Astar has developed a solution to empower dApp builders through dApp staking, other developers building outside can’t tap into that functionality as long as interoperability isn’t given.

It’s also worth mentioning that current solutions like bridges (more on them below) tend to add complexity and smart contract risks. Unsurprisingly, the top 5 DeFi hacks all involved bridge protocols. With better ways for chains to interact, bridges might become a thing of the past or change their form significantly.

Interoperability matters as a fundamental building block for a decentralized web that powers seamless, interconnected experiences. While the paradigm in web2 has been competition, web3 networks benefit from interconnectedness, thanks to network effects.

## Benefits of Blockchain Interoperability

Interoperability between chains offers an array of benefits, including:

* **Customizable web3 services:** With composability across chains, builders will be able to create services that weren’t possible in legacy systems. Interoperable smart contracts could find use in industries such as health care and law by enabling parties to share information while seamlessly switching between public and private environments. Combining strengths of different chains will empower new use cases, and some are already playing out, such as combining the storage protocol arweave with an NFT on a native blockchain and then rendering the data via a decentralized Front-end hosted on a third chain. * **Decentralization:** Truly interoperable ecosystems could create decentralized hubs that facilitate communication between hundreds or thousands of chains.
* **Cross-industry collaboration:** Interoperability enables teams to collaborate instead of competing by reducing silos and playing into each other's
* strengths.
* **Unrestricted flow of data and assets:** with interoperable systems, value, and information aren’t restricted to one ecosystem anymore but can move seamlessly.
* **Scalability:** as of now, services are limited by the underlying infrastructure. Not anymore when they can grow across multiple chains.

Even though interoperability is in its infancy, a few disadvantages have become clear already.

## Disadvantages of Blockchain Interoperability

While interoperability offers an array of attractive benefits, it’s crucial to be aware of some challenges developers and users will face, such as:

* **Differing levels of trust and security**: when signing up for one service on a highly secure chain, users expect that level of security across all they do. However, with interoperable chains, assets are potentially transferred from secure to less safe environments opening them up to manipulation.
* **Throughput differences:** Some apps require high throughput and near-instant validation. Building across chains with different scalability can lead to problems negatively impacting the user experience or even causing congestion.
* **Systemic risk:** if all chains are hyper-interconnected, the failure of one could pose a risk for all others.

## How is interoperability achieved?

Already builders have created ecosystems that focus on interoperability, allowing chains that use their tech to communicate seamlessly.

### Polkadot

Polkadot is an ecosystem of chains all connected through a relay chain that provides security and decentralization. All code is built using the Substrate framework, which allows builders to compose complex dApps from existing pieces of code. Polkadot breaks down the silo between chains with XCM, a messaging standard for chains to communicate and securely transfer assets and rich data.

### Cosmos

Cosmos is another multi-chain ecosystem. Unlike Polkadot, chains aren’t connected via a layer-0 blockchain but communicate through the Cosmo hub. The hub monitors the state of each zone and reports back. Comos allows apps to customize chains for their needs while benefitting from the ability to communicate with other Cosmos chains. When chains in Cosmos or Polkadot want to communicate with other chains outside of their respective ecosystems, they’ll have to tap into different interoperability solutions.

## Bridges

Cross-chain bridges are a primary way to move value from one ecosystem to another. This value transfer can be achieved through the following:

* **Burn and mint** where tokens on the first chain are burned, and new ones are minted on the destination chain
* **Lock and mint, where tokens are locked in a smart contract and wrapped tokens are issued on the destination chain**
* **Liquidity Pools:** some bridges facilitate asset transfer through pools of assets from origin and destination chains.

Bridges tend to rely on multi-sig set-ups and, with significant value locked, have become a favorite target for hackers. The Multichain fallout most recently illustrated the lack of decentralization in bridges.

## Atomic Swaps

Atomic swaps are a type of token swap across chains without intermediaries that involves using smart contracts and locking assets for a short time. These swaps don’t require using bridges and are called atomic because the trade either happens and both receive each others’ funds or both simply keep their funds. While the concept was first introduced in 2013, it wasn’t until 2017 that the first atomic swap took place, with [Charlie Lee swapping from Litecoin to Bitcoin](https://twitter.com/SatoshiLite/status/911328252928643072), and they remain niche to this day.

## Oracles

It’s not just a value that moves between chains but also information. Oracles like Chainlink bridges the gap between the real world and blockchain, but also between normally incompatible blockchain ecosystems. This way, builders have access to information on what’s happening in other ecosystems and can integrate that data into their apps.

## Multichain smart contracts

Sometimes, dApps only want to trigger the execution of a function on a different blockchain. Multichain smart contracts enable that by connecting chains allowing developers to call a contract on another chain. With the launch of Multichain Smart Contracts at Astar, we’re already enabling Substrate contracts to trigger functions in Ethereum contracts.

## Messaging Protocols

XCM is a standard that establishes how messages are sent across chains in Polkadot. The actual protocol for sending these messages is XCMP and remains under development. Eventually, it could be used to share information outside of the Polkadot ecosystem. Another web3 messaging protocol currently entering the market is XMTP, which recently was integrated by Coinbase wallet to facilitate social interactions with users of other dApps that have integrated the protocol, such as Lens Protocol.

What is blockchain interoperability?

## FSA asks for tax reforms 

The Financial Services Agency has released its requests for tax reforms for the coming fiscal year 2024\. Unsurprisingly, a big focus of their proposition is cryptocurrencies, in addition to realizing a nation focused on asset management and becoming a financial center of the world and a hub in Asia. 

For crypto in particular, their request is supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and aimed at addressing the year-end taxation for third-party held cryptocurrencies”. Businesses that hold tokens from other issuers than themselves have to tax them regardless of whether they realize profits or not. Not even the US taxes paper gains, making Japan an unattractive location for token investors and crypto entrepreneurs in general. 

By changing the tax, the FSA hopes to promote web3 and blockchain and prevent entrepreneurs and funds from setting up store in Singapore instead. Most lawmakers are unlikely to raise any objections, so maybe next year already, Japan’s taxes will be a little less daunting.   

**Takeaway**: A government actively trying to foster a web3 sector cannot afford to stifle it with unreasonable taxation. Many promising Fintech startups have already moved away, which doesn’t align with the idea of becoming a hub. 

## MUFJ Trust and Ginco jointly develop Crypto Trust Services

Mitsubishi UFJ Trust is taking its first foray into offering crypto custody services in collaboration with GInco, a crypto-native enterprise. Together, they aim to work on an offering that will enable institutional investors to invest in tokens and foster a favorable environment for companies to issue tokens.   

Throughout the collaboration, MUFJ trust will leverage its expertise in financial services to build a trustee service and offer secure custody for crypto, whereas Ginco is contributing its wallet, which is built to cater to enterprise needs. 

The Crypto Trust Service Scheme will facilitate two categories of investing: one where token issuers and beneficiaries are the same and another category where institutional investors bring the tokens they hold into the trust to be safeguarded.   

Outside of Ginco and MUFJ Trust, a total of 9 companies are planning to participate in the scheme. It’s not the first time MUFJ is explored web3\. Earlier this year, they partnered with NTT Data to build standardized infrastructure for digital assets, and they also have built a stablecoin issuance platform. 

**Takeaway:** While in other countries, regulatory constraints have kept big banks from building their own blockchain-based solutions, Japanese Megabanks are exploring the intersection of blockchain and traditional finance - all in adherence with KYC, AML, and other compliance frameworks. 

## PDC’s loyalty program combines digital signage and NFTs

PDC has announced a loyalty program aimed at commercial facilities that combine digital signage and NFTs. Digital signage is a segment of electronic signage and describes a network of electronic displays used to distribute information or promote products. 

So far, PDC is better known for its creation of the OneGate digital media management platform, which is backed by Panasonic, NTT East Japan, and others. Now, with the loyalty program, the team aims to use web3 to enhance visitors' experience. PDC is joined by ProofX and PlaySync in the development efforts. 

Once created, their new loyalty program will allow companies to create their own NFT-based stamp rallies and events using screens displayed in their facilities. For example, a shopping mall could display different QR codes on all their floors that visitors can collect to claim a discount in the lunch restaurant.  

It’s unclear which blockchain will be used to facilitate the NFT issuance. However, PlayThink has recently launched an Avalanche Subnet, so some speculate it could be built on top of that.   

**Takeaway:** Considering how many screens there are in big Japanese cities, it was just a question of time until someone figured out how to leverage them for business. People are already quite used to scanning QR codes from screens - adding NFTs into the mix enables companies to learn more about their consumers and offer more custom journeys.

In cryptography, zero-knowledge proofs solve a seemingly impossible task: verifying that someone owns a piece of information without revealing it. Recently, zero-knowledge proofs have found more widespread use in the blockchain industry to help scale networks using layer 2s.

## What are zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP)? 

Zero-knowledge proofs, short ZKPs, are cutting-edge technology that allows the verification of information without revealing it while adding a high level of security and privacy. The concept was first introduced in 1985 by Shafi Goldwasser, Silvio Micali, and Charles Rackoff in a paper titled: [”The knowledge complexity of interactive proof systems." ](https://people.csail.mit.edu/silvio/Selected%20Scientific%20Papers/Proof%20Systems/The%5FKnowledge%5FComplexity%5FOf%5FInteractive%5FProof%5FSystems.pdf)  

The goal of a zero-knowledge proof is simple: convincing the verifier that a claim is true. Each proof involves two different parties:

* **Prover:** the one who wants to prove a claim
* **Verifier:** the party that verifies the claim.

Good zero-knowledge proof algorithms have the following three characteristics: 

* **Completeness:** It’s highly probable that the verifier will accept the proof when it is true - as long as both adhere to the protocol
* **Soundness:** If the claim is untrue, the prover should be unable to convince the verifier of the opposite, the only exception being extremely unlikely circumstances.
* **Zero-Knowledge:** The verifier obtains no further information about the secret. All they do is verify that the claim is true.

Their Benefits include: 

* Privacy and security as they allow verification of data without revealing it
* Scalability: by allowing the verification of transactions off-chain
* Interoperability: ZKPs can play a crucial role in aiding communication and transfers between different chains.

### Interactive vs. non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs 

We differentiate between two general types of ZKPs depending on the level of interaction they require between the verifier and the prover. 

#### **Interactive zero-knowledge proof** 

In an interactive zero-knowledge proof, the verifier and prover communicate back and forth to establish the witness’s veracity. Witness refers to the piece of data that the prover wants to prove and can be any data.   

Throughout the process, the verifier will send a challenge to the prover. This is a randomly generated value or question the prover must respond to. Because these challenges are randomly generated, they add a further element of unpredictability, increasing the security of the proof by making it impossible for the verifier to predict or precompute.   

After the prover sends the result to the challenge, the verifier can verify that the response is valid. All early iterations of ZKP algorithms were interactive, which made them inefficient as they required a lot of communication between the parties. Further research led to the creation of non-interactive ZKPs, drastically reducing the communication between verifier and prover.

#### **Non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs**

Non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs require only one round of communication between verifier and prover, making them significantly harder. This is made possible by having a shared key, also called Common Reference String, allowing verification of claims as long as one has said key. Instead of back-and-forth communications, the prover passes the secret into a special algorithm to compute and then sends it to the verifier. The verifier uses the key to verify. 

### Types of zero-knowledge proof algorithms 

Breakthroughs in cryptography have enabled the creation of ever-more sophisticated zero-knowledge proofs, including quantum-secure algorithms.   

#### zk-SNARKS

zk-SNARK is short for Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge and describes the first non-interactive proof algorithm, which relied on a shared key to establish public parameters that could be used to verify claims. However, they require an initial trusted setup because they rely on creating a shared key.   

They are succinct because the witness (secret) is smaller than the proof so that it can be verified in milliseconds. ZCash was the first to widely adopt zk-SNARKS to enable fully encrypted transactions without losing the ability to confirm their adherence to consensus rules.   

#### Bulletproofs 

Bulletproofs were introduced with the words “[Short like bullets, yet offering bulletproof security assumptions](https://web.stanford.edu/~buenz/pubs/bulletproofs.pdf)” as a technology to enhance blockchain privacy by enabling confidential transactions. These proofs don’t require a trusted setup and were designed with cryptocurrencies in mind. They effectively hide amounts transferred, but verification is more time-consuming than with SNARKs.   

#### PLONK 

[PLONK, or Permutations over Lagrange-bases for Oecumenical Noninteractive arguments of](https://eprint.iacr.org/2019/953.pdf)

[Knowledge](https://eprint.iacr.org/2019/953.pdf) is a zk algorithm that led to a breakthrough in efficient zk-SNARK technology. Instead of requiring the generation of a shared string for each new use case, it constructs a universal proof system that can be used for any type of computation. It’s best known for its efficiency and is currently used by Aztec Network, Matter Labs, and other web3 projects working on private transactions.   

#### zk-STARKS

zk-STARKS stands for Zero-Knowledge Scalable Transparent Argument of Knowledge and is a newer iteration of zk algorithms that removes the need for an initial trusted setup. Additionally, zk-STARKs are highly scalable as they can generate and verify proofs fast, even when the size of the underlying witness is large. 

Thanks to generating provably random parameters for proving and verifying, zk-STARKs also offer high transparency. However, this comes at the cost of requiring more computation power during the verification process as zk-STARKs generate larger proofs.   

## Use-cases for Zero-Knowledge Proofs 

Even outside of the blockchain industry, zero-knowledge proofs have found applications. 

### Finance 

The [Dutch bank ING uses zero-knowledge proofs ](https://www.ingwb.com/en/insights/distributed-ledger-technology/ing-launches-major-addition-to-blockchain-technology#:~:text='Zero%2DKnowledge%20Proof'%20offers,lies%20in%20a%20known%20range.)to allow customers to prove that a secret number lies within a known range. This is useful throughout mortgage applications by enabling applicants to verify that they fall in a specific salary range without revealing their exact salary.   

Other finance use cases include using zero-knowledge proofs in the context of KYC and AML. Instead of requiring customers to verify from scratch whenever they sign up for a new service, ZKPs could pave the way for a more seamless user experience, allowing users to verify their personhood without having to reveal sensitive information. 

### Online Voting 

Zero-Knowledge Proofs can also power online voting systems by allowing users to vote anonymously while ensuring that everyone’s vote is included - and making it verifiable. 

### Machine Learning 

In the context of Machine Learning, Zero-Knowledge Proofs allow the owner of an algorithm to share the results of their model without revealing the entire model or further information about it - allowing owners to keep their edge. 

### Internet of Things

ZKs can also help manage the ever-increasing number of smart devices connected to the internet, ranging from Alarm systems that call the Police or rings that track all your vital data. They can play a role in maintaining user privacy by verifying that only authorized devices can access specific data and enable secure communication. Additionally, they might aid in reducing the energy demands of IoT devices. 

  
## Use-cases for Zero-Knowledge Proofs in Blockchain 

### Anonymous transactions 

Privacy coins designed for anonymous payments have been using ZKPs for their transactions since the beginning. [Monero](https://www.getmonero.org/), for example, goes even further and shields all details around a transaction while still enabling nodes to validate the transaction. 

dApps like Tornado Cash have implemented ZKPs to obfuscate transaction details. In Tornado, users deposit funds into the protocol and can then withdraw mixed funds[. ZKPs are used to verify a user’s right to withdraw. ](https://mirror.xyz/freesuton.eth/zGgyY50IAz68T4wom0rRg3NbalpDGMJCthiokBJgGEY)

### Outsource computing 

Blockchain nodes are limited in computing power and can hit their limits when demand is high, and the network cannot scale to accommodate it. ZKPs allow outsourcing of computation and enable original nodes to verify the results. This is the mechanism zk-Rollups rely on to increase the throughput of an underlying chain.   

Rollups process transactions off-chain and then submit the results of their works as proof of execution to the mainchain - increasing the transactions the system can handle. 

### Data Compression 

Thanks to their ability to create proofs that are smaller than the witness, ZKPs are also used to compress data. Filecoin, for example, uses ZKPs to establish proof of storage of specific files by users without hindering scalability. Mina Protocol is also using ZKPs but to help[ reduce the size of its ledger by compressing all of its verification data into less than 22KB. ](https://minaprotocol.com/)  

### Prevent front-running and minimize MEV 

A major challenge with public blockchain networks is that they open up ample opportunities for savvy traders to front-run and squeeze more fees out of less savvy traders. Front-running on a blockchain can be achieved by simply paying the miner to have one's transaction included earlier than the one you’re front-running.   

However, by hiding transaction details, ZKPs can prevent bots from looking up trades and front-running them. In a similar vein, ZKPs could help prevent MEV (maximal extractable value), often described as an invisible tax that miners can extract from unknowing users. One of the reasons it occurs is that miners have full visibility of the transactions waiting to be included in blocks (in the mempool). Using ZKPs, these could be submitted, proven, and verified without revealing details to the miners. 

## Downsides of ZKPs

While Zero-Knowledge Proofs are great for many things in blockchain and beyond, they come with a few drawbacks:   

* **Computation:** ZKPs are more resource-intensive than using other proving systems, especially when it comes to complicated proofs. This can result in longer processing times, affecting scalability and user experience. Additionally, verification can get expensive, with zk-Rollups on Ethereum paying up to 500,000 gas to verify one single zk-SNARK and more for zk-STARKs.
* **Trust assumptions:** Depending on the algorithm used, they are not entirely trustless. In an ideal case, multiple honest participants will join a trusted setup ceremony, but there is no way for users to be sure.
* **Complexity:** ZKPs add another layer of complexity to often already complex decentralized systems. They make protocols harder to audit, which could increase the risk of critical vulnerabilities being found.

Every use case of ZKPs requires a careful evaluation of benefits and downsides. Nevertheless, ZKPs remain an exciting advancement in technology, and with further progress in hardware, some of the downsides might even disappear completely.

Introduction to Zero Knowledge Proofs

Last week, our team was at [Token 2049, a leading crypto conference bringing the crypto industry together in Singapore. ](https://www.token2049.com/)Among other things, we finally revealed what Astar Supernova was about. Thanks to everyone who joined us, the organizers, for a tremendously well-executed conference with gripping talks and many insights. 

  
We left Singapore feeling more optimistic than ever about the future of crypto, especially in Asia, and are excited to contribute to this space. While we gave talks, we also took the opportunity to listen in to panels and learn from other stakeholders where they see the industry moving and the most significant trends.   

Here are a few of them: 

## Real World Assets (RWA)

Real World Assets or short RWAs remain a major focus in DeFi and beyond, driven by increased earnings on government bonds like T-Bills. RWAs describe financial assets such as real estate, gold, loans, bonds, and other securities that are brought on-chain through tokenization. Benefits of RWAs onchain include their enhanced liquidity, price discovery, accessibility, automation via smart contract, and previously impossible levels of transparency.   

Organizations like Maker DAO are currently earning record revenues from holding RWAs, and DeFi protocols like Goldfinch and Centrifuge work with financial institutions to increase the RWA portfolio.   

In Japan, megabanks like MUFG are providing the infrastructure necessary to issue stablecoins and other security tokens, recognizing that RWAs could be the catalyst to onboard more traditional financial organizations and allow big pension funds to hold onchain assets.   

Some thought leaders recognize the rise of RWAs now as a sign of maturity of the industry since the idea itself isn’t new, yet it has only taken off now. Watch this space.  

## Layer-2s & ZK Technology 

ICYMI, Layer-2s are the next big thing in crypto, as everyone agrees that the base layer of Ethereum does not scale, and a lot more block space is needed to facilitate mass adoption. While the Layer-2s with the biggest adoption and TVL are still optimistic rollups, the trend is toward integrating[ Zero-Knowledge-Proofs.](https://astar.network/blog/introduction-to-zero-knowledge-proofs-39331) As zero knowledge technology is maturing, we’re collaborating with Polygon to launch[ Astar zkEVM](https://astar.network/blog/astar-zkevm:-supernova-is-here!-39292). This fully EVM equivalent zk rollup will bring together the Polkadot and Ethereum ecosystems and increase the cross-chain functionality of Astar Network.

## Web 2.5

Another trend we’ve witnessed is the increased collaboration between web2 companies and web3 to build what is dubbed web 2.5 products. Examples of that include Telegram’s integration of a web3 wallet and Grab’s addition of web3 capabilities in their product. Both of these applications together boast a user base of more than 1 billion. If successful, this could propel other web2 apps and social media companies to follow suit.   

The move coincides with an increased focus on easing the onboarding process, removing friction such as safeguarding a seed phrase, obtaining funds for gas payments, and bridging. Account abstraction allows developers to create seamless experiences that rival the web2 experience of logging in with a social account. 

## Regulation in Asia 

While regulators in the USA, like the SEC and the CFTC, have been going after DeFi companies and exchanges - Asian regulators are moving in the opposite direction. Overall, the sentiment has been very positive, with news from Japan suggesting that companies will now be able to raise capital via tokens. Similarly, other regulators in the area have focused on providing clarity and frameworks for crypto startups and enterprises to experiment, innovate, raise, and invest, all while maintaining high regulatory standards.

## Japanese startups can soon raise with tokens 

Japanese startups who issued a token often incorporated their companies in Singapore because this would allow them to fundraise using native tokens instead of equity. While IEOs had already been permitted as a mechanism to support web3 innovation financing in the country, this change will enable national startups to raise funds directly.   

VCs will also be impacted by the change. Typically, VCs will set up limited partnerships to pool capital with other companies to invest, capping their exposure. However, Japan had strict restrictions in place limiting the assets they could invest in and requiring that half the money be invested domestically. 

In addition to these changes, the government is considering making changes to the way cryptocurrencies are taxed, including removing the need to tax paper gains & losses.   

**Takeaway:** The government is following its path of creating an environment that fosters the domestic web3 startup scene while allowing them to fully participate in the global innovation landscape. Overall, this move is cohesive with the goal of web3 as a national agenda. 

## Square Enix invests in DMTP.

Square Enix, the game developer behind the well-known Final Fantasy series has started branching out, investing in web3\. On September 20, the team at Highpen, a Singapore-based company known for their product “DMTP,” announced that they successfully closed a fundraising round with a contribution from Square Enix. 

DMTP is a communication protocol that allows sending messages between wallets. In addition to basic messaging, it offers a reward system for users to earn tokens based on their activity. The protocol is complemented by CHat NFT stickers that enhance the user experience to be more fun and engaging.   

Square Enix’s Director of BD explained their investment with the belief that marketing and communication in Web3 require different approaches, and wallet-to-wallet communication was an innovative approach to web3 marketing. 

**Takeaway:** The idea of messaging between wallets isn’t new. Nevertheless, no one protocol has so far reached major adoption. The closest competitor to DMTP in the West is XMTP, the messaging standard integrated into Lens, Coinbase Wallet, and other web3 dapps. My bet is, ultimately, there will be one dominant protocol - because no one wants to handle a variety of protocols just to facilitate messaging. 

## Astar expands to Polygon with zkEVM. 

Astar Network, the go-to-market chain in Japan, has unveiled plans to develop an Ethereum rollup using Polygon’s Chain Development Kit. In collaboration with Polygon, the team aims to further drive enterprise adoption in Japan, focusing on gaming and entertainment. 

Rollups are a scaling technology that increases an underlying chain’s scalability by taking transactions off the main chain, processing them together, and only reporting the results back to the main chain. 

The Astar zkEVM will inherit Ethereum’s security, and fee revenues earned from operating the layer-2 solution will go toward enhancing the value of the native Astar token. Japan Web3 Roundup: Let the investing begin

## Monex Securities and NTT Docomo Capital alliance 

Monex Securities, the parent company of the Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck, has announced a capital and business alliance with NTT Docomo and its parent group, the Monex Group. NTT Docomo is one of the largest phone operators in Japan, with over 50 million customers nationwide and a market share of 36.1%. Additionally, the mobile operator runs a loyalty program called dPoint Club, which counts around 96 million members. 

With this partnership, the companies hope to offer educational services such as teaching about asset investment in its d Payment app. Furthermore, the capital and business partnership will focus on evolving the existing business model of the securities company and expanding it to include new asset issuance services. One area they are exploring is the realm of security tokens, tokens that are backed by existing financial securities.   

**Takeaway:** NTT Docomo is in web3 to make its mark. The company isn’t just entering this alliance with a major exchange but has also shared that they are launching a new web3 company. In Japan, web3 is seen by big corporates as an area to innovate and connect with their customers in stark contrast with how many corporates approach it in the Western hemisphere. 

## DID Consortium 

Eight Japanese companies recently formed the “DID/VC Co-creation Consortium”, short DVCC, to work together on researching decentralized identifiers' verifiable credentials and collaborate on business initiatives related to them.   

Established by Mitsibushi UFJ Trust and Banking, NTT Data, Hitachi, Fujitsu, and others, the consortium aims to develop interoperability rules, frameworks, and standards that help the implementation of DID & VCs in society while facilitating their use in business environments. 

Decentralized identifiers are self-sovereign digital identities that are managed by blockchain, whereas Verifiable Credentials are an open standard for digital credentials set up by the W3C. These types of identities offer enhanced privacy resistance to tampering and empower individuals to manage their own information securely. 

The member companies will use their shared expertise to collaborate with government agencies on the topic while creating standards that work best for the Japanese market.   

**Takeaway:** DIDs are an exciting field that promises to offer users more privacy and control over who sees and can use their data. It’s natural for big companies in the realm of finance and tech to tap their toes into it. However, challenges remain in making these solutions easy to use and accessible to all.

Fujitsu Japan is now collaborating with the Kanazawa Institute of Technology’s Idehara Lab to promote the use of technology to revitalize a community. With Japan aging fast, some regions increasingly face the challenge that there are few individuals involved in community development. To address this challenge, Fujitsu and the Kanazawa Institute of Technology have devised a campaign that will enable non-locals to interact with the community.   

Throughout the initiative, Fujitsu’s Web3 Acceleration Platform will issue NFTs that will be distributed during a local light-up event held from October 20 - 22, 2023\. The combined use of AR and NFTs will allow visitors to experience Kanazawa in a new light, by projecting virtual worlds that run in sync with a live piano performance. All participants will need is a smartphone web app to interact with the event. 

  
With the campaign, Fujitsu hopes to establish the effectiveness of NFTs in encouraging repeat visits to tourist destinations and boosting local businesses. 

**Takeaway:** NFTs can be much more than just a boring JPEG to flex on one’s X profile. They can become a vehicle to engage communities and enhance events by merging virtual reality and the real world.

Japan Web3 Roundup: Capital Alliances, DIDs, and regional NFTs

Rollups have become the primary way for teams to increase the throughput of Ethereum. Or it'd be more accurate to say, increase its ability to handle transactions by outsourcing some of the work. Currently, there are two types of rollups in the market: optimistic rollups and zk-rollups. 

In this blog, we'll illustrate the differences between the two and discuss their benefits and challenges.   

## Why do we need rollups in the first place? 

Before explaining the differences between approaches, it's worth reiterating where the need for rollups originates. Ethereum, as the first smart contract and global computer, wasn't built to accommodate millions of transactions per second. As demand and interest in using dApps grew, so did gas fees as users on Ethereum competed to have their transactions included.   

It became clear during every popular NFT drop that Ethereum couldn't scale to mass adoption. Therefore, teams started working on Layer 2 solutions that would increase the system's overall transactions by taking transactions and processing them off-chain. 

## Differences between optimistic and zk Rollups 

The name rollup describes how these technologies process and then submit transactions to the mainchain. They "roll up" various transactions on the rollup into one batch and then submit it to Ethereum. 

So-called sequencers connect Ethereum with the rollup. These operators facilitate transactions, produce rollup blocks, and submit the data from the Layer 2 to the Layer 1\. What differentiates optimistic and zk rollups are their trust assumptions.  

### Optimistic Rollups 

Optimistic rollups assume that all transactions are valid until challenged, assuming honest actors. Because of this assumption, transactions can be processed faster, leading to higher efficiency. 

Any network observer can call out bad transactions. Fraud-proving schemes with a resolution period, also called a challenge period, guarantee that after every transaction, there is a time in which the validity can still be questioned. If an error is found, the wrong transaction is re-executed, and blocks are updated. Anyone approving the bad transaction is penalized. Optimistic rollups submit all transaction data to the main chain. 

Examples of Optimistic Rollups are Optimism, Arbitrium, and Base. Interestingly, despite operating for a while, Arbitrum's [fraud proofs have never been used. ](https://cointelegraph.com/news/arbitrums-fraud-proofs-havent-been-used-since-it-launched)Optimism [has announced work on Fraud Proofs, yet the timeline is unclear.](https://tokeninsight.com/en/news/optimism-is-developing-the-fraud-proof-system-but-no-launching-timetable) In the meantime, the Base team[ has shipped a tool named pessimism](https://www.theblock.co/post/252120/base-introduces-security-monitoring-system-named-pessimism) to monitor the rollup's state and recognize any dishonest actors or attacks. 

### zk-Rollups 

Unlike optimistic rollups, zk-Rollups [leverage zero-knowledge-proofs ](https://astar.network/blog/introduction-to-zero-knowledge-proofs-39331)to verify the validity of transactions - without simply assuming them to be valid. Nodes on zk-Rollups generate transaction data, state commitment, and zero-knowledge validity proofs. State commitments are a snapshot of the current state of the rollup, including all current balances and past transaction history, 

Thanks to zero-knowledge cryptography, the validity proofs generated are smaller than the transaction data, allowing for quick verification and lowering the cost to submit to the mainchain, thanks to compressing down data.   

Examples of zkRollups that are up and running include zkSync, Starkware, and Polygon zkEVM.  

## Benefits and Drawbacks 

Neither rollup solution is perfect. For now, much of the criticism towards rollups is aimed at their centralized sequencer, run by a single party. Nevertheless, this can be considered the growing pains of an industry working towards mass adoption. 

Beyond this shared critique, zk and optimistic rollups have different benefits and drawbacks in security, privacy, cost, and capital efficiency/latency.   

### Security 

**Optimistic rollups:** In a scenario with no honest nodes, a malicious actor could steal funds because all transactions are assumed to be honest. Optimistic rollups are vulnerable to censorship attacks where malicious sequencers or validators prevent or delay transactions  

**ZK rollups:** While immune to censorship attacks, they still require a trusted setup to generate the secret parameters to create zero-knowledge-proofs. An attacker could create fake proofs and steal funds if these were ever compromised. 

### Cost 

**Optimistic rollups:** Any standard Layer 2 node can compute fraud proofs without requiring additional hardware. This keeps overall computing costs lower. However, posting transaction data to L1 can be a significant cost factor.   

**ZK rollups:** Thanks to highly efficient data compression where indexes represent user data, zkRollups save costs for publishing on the mainchain. However, verifying validity proofs requires special hardware, which can result in higher user fees. 

### Privacy 

**Optimistic rollups:** Privacy on optimistic rollups is equivalent to interacting on a layer 1 blockchain. Anyone can see wallet addresses and link your transaction on Layer 2 to your mainchain account.   

**zkRollups:** zkRollups have higher privacy as they do not directly tie your address on Layer 2 to your mainchain address. Only the sender and receiver will know the details of a transaction. However, there are still some limitations as public keys are used to sign, which potentially can reveal patterns. 

### Capital Efficiency & Latency 

**Optimistic rollups:** Thanks to their optimistic assumptions, transactions are confirmed nearly instantly without having to wait for Layer 1\. However, it's a different story when it comes to finality. Due to the challenge period, for transactions to reach finality, it can take minutes or hours, depending on congestion and network security.   

**zkRollups:** Since generating validity proofs is computationally heavy work, it can take longer to verify and confirm transactions. However, finality is reached as soon as the proof is submitted, which depends on the block time and gas price of the mainchain.   

## Which one to choose? 

As illustrated, both technologies have benefits and downsides. Both Optimistic and zkRollups achieve their goal of effectively scaling the Ethereum network, allowing more users to participate.  

Currently, optimistic rollups are dominating in terms of value-locked and economic activity. But with hardware improvements, zkRollups are unlocking faster proving times and could potentially take over. Another indication for that is that both Arbiturm and Optimism are running grants to explore adding zk to their rollups. 

  
In the meantime, which one to choose depends largely on the goal one is trying to achieve. Optimistic rollups with their fast transaction processing and ease of deploying EVM dApps have become home to DeFi apps like Uniswap, SushiSwap, and Aave.

  
In contrast, apps that require higher security and privacy, such as identity verification protocols or private DEXs, have chosen zkRollups to deploy.

Sometimes, it’s hard for an international audience to understand what initiatives are happening in Japan and their significance. This blog post provides a glimpse into the companies building on top of Astar Network in Japan and why it matters.

**A bit of background**

While regulatory environments in the states and Europe increasingly get in the way of innovation and crypto companies, Japan has adopted an opposing stance and made web3 a national strategy. Consequently, it has started to change legal frameworks to establish more favorable conditions for web3 companies, VCs, as individuals investing in crypto. This includes allowing crypto companies to raise in tokens and lowering taxes on capital gains while removing taxes on paper gains.

Overall, the sentiment towards web3 remains positive in Japan, as holders have been more protected by global downturn events such as FTX's collapse and Luna's. And with its vast history of successful cultural exports, there is ample opportunity for corporates and startups to connect Japan with the world using web3\. Exchange trading volumes might be down, but the excitement continues, and experts suggest that Japan’s web3 success will come from focusing on creative endeavors and empowering users in the digital economy.

## Orix Bank distributes 20,000 marine NFTs 🐟

Orix Bank, a financial services group active in over 20 countries worldwide, has partnered with Sushi Top Marketing to provide a unique experience for the visitors of the Sumida Aquarium from September 30 to October 15\. Throughout the campaign period, visitors who visited the newest permanent exhibit focused on the Ogasawara Islands could collect commemorative digital codes using QR codes.

When scanning the QR codes, they would automatically receive one of five randomly generated “Ogaswara Base” NFTs showcasing the marine life around the Ogasawara Islands. To facilitate the claiming experience, Sushi Top Marketing has provided its NFT shot technology, which enables anyone to create a wallet in their mobile browser and tie it to a familiar login experience.

**Why does this matter?**

Sumida Aquarium is a well-visited sight, with roughly 1.4 million visitors annually. It sits right under the famous Tokyo Sky Tree, attracting many global visitors. One of its most popular features is the largest open-tank habitat for penguins and a watertank with over 500 jellyfish.

The Ogawara Base is a new exhibition that is expected to welcome thousands of visitors per month. With the campaign, Orix Bank and Sushi Top Marketing are onboarding a diverse audience that has likely never touched NFTs before to web3\. The NFT drop was limited to 20,000 commemorative NFTs, yet everyone newly onboarded is a win for web3 overall. And aquariums tend to attract not only those already familiar with web3 but anyone from young families to grandparents visiting with their grandchildren to Japan tourists.

## Proof of Shochu- powered by Kumamoto

Kumamoto, a prefecture in the central part of Japan’s Kyushu island, is embracing the Metaverse to help boost its traditional way of producing Japanese shochu. Kumamoto is a forward-thinking prefecture that has achieved some fame as the home of Kumamon. This black bear mascot has significantly boosted its tourism and awareness overseas as free licensing enabled anyone to use it for their purposes.

Beyond cute mascots, Kumamoto is also home to clear waters and a unique tradition of producing Kuma Shochu, a liquor made in only 27 distilleries in the area. To ensure that the tradition lives on, Kumamoto has partnered with Mizuho Bank and the Cosmize Metaverse to encourage a new audience to learn about Kuma Shochu and increase the community around it, preserving the tradition.

Throughout the campaign, the companies will issue three different types of NFTs:

* **Base NFTs** that anyone interested can claim
* **Parts NFTs** that are awarded to active contributors promoting Kuma Shochu and its community
* **True NFTs** unlock for holders of Base and Parts NFTs and come with exclusive rewards such as access to tasting events.

Shochu is one of the most consumed alcoholic spirits in Japan and has since grown beyond the borders of the island nation. The global Shochu market continues growing with a growth rate hovering around 2.6%, and leading producers like Ichiko sell over 7 million liters of the transparent liquid worldwide.

While Shochu and liquors are deeply embedded in Japanese culture, and Kumamoto prefecture proudly has developed its own tradition, with an aging population, the question lingers: who will keep up this part of the culture?

Through the collaboration between one of the biggest banks in Japan with 20 million users and the Cosmize Metaverse, Kumamoto uses a digitally native tool to tap into the young Sake enthusiasts, who might just be the right people to uphold the tradition. Building a community around it also further strengthens people’s ties with the local brand while opening access up to anyone in Japan.

While the unknown eye might confuse the two, Shochu and Sake are two different types of drinks. They are both Japanese beverages; however, Sake is brewed from fermenting rice, and Shochu is a distilled spirit made from grains. Consequently, Shochu has a higher alcohol content than sake, between 20 - 30%.
