#1505 · SportStake Development & EU Marketing Funding Proposal

Dear Polkadot Community,

Following our initial discussion post, we are now officially submitting our treasury proposal for funding.

SportStake is a mobile wallet app that allows sports fans to stake DOT while automatically supporting their favorite sports clubs by sharing a small portion of their staking rewards. This provides clubs with an additional funding source for initiatives such as youth development programs and other community-focused activities.

We have already partnered with NAC Breda and SV Kampong, two well-known Dutch sports organizations. These pilot programs have helped grow our staking pool to over 50,000 DOT, demonstrating strong interest from both fans and clubs. With treasury funding, we aim to expand these partnerships across Europe, enhance the app, and increase adoption.

📄 Full Proposal: SportStake Polkadot Funding Proposal 2025

We appreciate your support and encourage you to vote in favor of this proposal to help bring SportStake to more sports communities across Europe.

Thank you, The SportStake Team

Interesting proposal.

First of all, this proposal should go to the Marketing Bounty.

Feedback & questions from a marketing perspective:

  1. I think the sports angle is good. Recently, a couple of clubs have come forward with loyalty programs based on crypto and even attended a conference within a stadium.
  2. Timing-wise, a good opportunity, with more attention, is coming to the Mythicals Soccer/football/FIFA game soon. Here, you could try to reach out and partner with Mythical.
  3. Spain should probably be your top priority because it's somewhat the Euro-champ in crypto adoption.
  4. What leagues are you targeting?
  5. Do you have examples for your messaging to this audience?
  6. Regarding the 130k for the European Marketing Campaign, I'd like to know what kind of activities you have planned here.
  7. Club Partnership Expansion would mostly cover HR expenses for BD?

Feedback & questions from a wallets perspective:

  1. Why did you choose your own wallet? Would a dashboard have been easier and cheaper to build? I assume it's because you also want the freedom to onboard other stackable assets.
  2. To get funding, you should get your app audited for security flaws.
  3. I downloaded and tried your wallet. It looks good but still feels like a wallet from 2020 when it comes to seed storage. I think there are other good examples out there that also offer guardian recovery. Also, the onboarding experience for a non-crypto audience has to provide some education. I do like the available teams and the social aspect of seeing that there are already 32 supporters for NAC.

  1. You probably should wrap your proposal into smaller, markets-related milestones to show that your team delivers on the promise.

@EricDistractive Thanks a lot for your detailed feedback—much appreciated!

We agree that this proposal could potentially fall under the Marketing Bounty, However, since a portion of the milestones also involves further development of the SportStake platform, we’re currently leaning towards a treasury proposal. That said, we’ll take a closer look at both routes before making a final decision.

On the marketing points you raised:

  1. Great point on Mythical. Reaching out to them is already on our to-do list. We see strong potential for collaboration.
  2. Spain is definitely high on our list for expansion. We have already initiated conversations with two La Liga clubs. We’re also exploring opportunities in the Bundesliga and Premier League.
  3. Regarding leagues: Initially, we are targeting clubs from La Liga, Bundesliga, and the Premier League as they have strong international fan bases. Beyond that, we plan to expand into other European leagues where we see engaged communities and crypto interest.
  4. On messaging examples: For our April pilot, we’re working with the four largest football fan sites in the Netherlands. Each will publish an editorial about SportStake and place banners linking directly to our platform. Messaging focuses on enabling fans to directly support their clubs through staking rewards, with simple calls to action.
  5. For the €130k European marketing campaign: This budget covers regional partnerships with fan platforms and influencers, in-stadium visibility (billboards, LED banners), targeted social media ads, and educational content aimed at lowering the barrier to entry for non-crypto users. We can provide a more detailed breakdown if helpful.
  6. Club Partnership Expansion: Yes, a large part of this covers HR costs, specifically for business development to secure new club partnerships and manage ongoing collaborations.

On the wallet perspective:

  1. We chose to develop our own mobile wallet rather than a dashboard/web app because accessibility is key for our target audience. Fans should be able to scan a QR code in a stadium, install the app, and start staking within minutes. Additionally, using keychains on the device improves the security of sensitive data compared to browser-based solutions. And yes, in the future, we do plan to onboard additional staking assets, so flexibility was another factor.
  2. An audit is already something we’re preparing for. We fully agree that this is necessary to strengthen security and build user trust.

Thanks for testing the wallet and sharing your thoughts! We hear you on the seed storage experience. QR-code based private keys is on our roadmap. Educational content will play a big role in this as well.

I hope this helps clarify some of our thinking and plans!
