They Thought We Were Aliens, but We Were Just Trading Bitcoin for Lunch

What was the first thing you ever bought using crypto? Well, this is a very interesting question, and I have to go back in years to remember. But judging that I started long ago in crypto (when I was still an employee), it's fair to say it was a lunch!

You might be asking how that was even possible, as at that time, not many exchanges were around, nor were people interested in crypto. But, in 2013, I got to know about a gaming website that paid Satoshis for catching a mouse. The site's name was pay dot info, if I’m not mistaken, and I played that game every Sunday. At the time, I was just a young boy, addicted to something that wasn’t even considered "real money" then.

I played that game until the website closed. Each day I played, I reached the threshold—I believe it was 2,000 Satoshis—and I used to beat that and withdraw more than 15,000 Satoshis at a time. The payment was instant, sent directly to my blockchain.com account, my first crypto wallet, which I opened using a Yahoo email. Good old times!

As I mentioned, I played the game until the website closed, and two years later, I started my one and only job at a warehouse. Well, I already had those Satoshis, and I remember very well how much—0.25000 BTC. At the time, it was worth about $75 just from playing games over two years! However, at the time, I couldn’t cash out that amount, as in my country, people barely knew about Bitcoin. So, how did I manage to cash out my gains?

Do you remember that I had already started working at the warehouse? Well, at the warehouse, I worked with an Indian dude—someone I still consider a friend to this day—who already knew about Bitcoin. When I told him about it, he promptly suggested that I sell the Bitcoin to him. But he could only pay through PayPal, as he had funds there that he wanted to spend.

Fortunately, I had (and still have) a very active PayPal account. I told him to send me his address, and in just a few steps, I transferred the Bitcoin to him. He then transferred the $75 to my PayPal account. People at work looked at us like we were aliens because they had no idea what we were doing. When the cash landed in my PayPal account, I already had a plan to spend it and store some.

Oh, you may be wondering how I spent that amount? Easy—I had my Mastercard from Goldmoney, an affiliate program I worked on, linked to PayPal. So, I just needed to withdraw the $75 to my card, and in less than 24 hours, I could cash out at any ATM in my country. That’s exactly what I did, and the next day, I went to ShopRite and bought my lunch during the break from the warehouse job.

So, it's fair to say my first use case of crypto was to buy my breakfast. What a time! I’m still taking a journey through the past and thinking to myself, "I’ve come a very long way in crypto." And you—do you still remember when you first used crypto? And for what? Let us know in the comments below.
