Astar Evolution: from Blockchain to Collective
The Astar Network is going through a significant transformation in its governance, shifting from a centralized to a decentralized system. The transition aims to empower the community and ASTR token holders to shape the network's future in a more democratic and inclusive manner. However, while adopting elements from Polkadot’s governance, Astar avoids replicating the inefficiencies observed in a 100% decentralized model.
As Sota Watanabe emphasizes, "I believe in the power of decentralization, but it must not be an excuse for not doing things the right way." Thus, Astar combines the best of both worlds: decentralization for inclusion and transparency, and a strategic level of centralization. The council-based model reflects this vision, offering a balanced solution that ensures both community participation and ecosystem stability.
Astar’s gov structure includes 3 councils: the Main Council, the Technical Committee, and the Community Council. These bodies play crucial roles in executing decisions and maintaining the network’s stability. Also, provides a level of centralized oversight that mitigates risks and prevents the network from becoming paralyzed by disagreements or lack of direction, issues that can arise in fully decentralized models.
Another key element is the involvement of the ASTR community. They actively propose ideas, vote on referendums, and request treasury funds for projects that benefit the ecosystem. By adopting a hybrid governance model, the Astar Network demonstrates that decentralization and strategic centralization are not mutually exclusive but complementary.
