Some New Found Chaos! (October 7th - October 13th)
What is up, my friends!
The evolution of Polkadot and Kusama continues nicely, with arguably the largest volume of news and content of the ecosystem being shared and created via WagMedia.
In keeping up with the staggering flow and to foster further growth, there is a new tweak to the way that awards are handled. Directors will award based on what they value the post as, whilst the Concierge will re-calculate that amount distributed based on the tier of the individual who submitted content.
To recap, there are two tiers for finding news: Tier 2 gets 50%, and Tier 1 gets 100% of the awards. For creating content there are three tiers: Tier 3 gets 30%, Tier 2 60%, and Tier 1 gets 100% of the awards.
These changes are only applied to specific channels. Treasury channels, lingo channels, marketing channels, writers' room, and events-watch are not affected. With this change, it is easier to see how work is valued.
We encourage participants to learn from posts from fellow waggers. Show appreciation with an upvote when admirable content is found. For instance, @Curley, @gambo, and @Darkspark have recently been finding and showing high quality news. For creators, check out the recent videos by @MaxTheo, threads by @TheFVK or @pnp, and articles by @Crane or @Vampsy, amongst many others.
Understand that not every find or creation can obtain the maximum award. As finding news is based on the source and its delivery, sometimes less is more. Whilst content creation tends to be underpinned by your research, script, and how the audience is engaged.
As participants grow and take on new approaches, their rewards will grow with them. We encourage everyone to level up both in quality and tier.
TOP NEWS OF THE WEEK
Newness was also the common theme across the two top stories covered within WagMedia this past week.
MangataX became the first parachain within the ecosystem to experience a novel governance attack. As per the article released by the team on October 8th, the hacker temporarily seized control of the council, before authorizing the transfer of funds (11,700 KSM) to the hacker’s wallet.
It was a sophisticated attack, which involved a strong understanding of parachain and governance mechanics, as well precise timing. The Mangata team managed to regain control of the council quickly and enacted a number of responses to the situation.
Firstly, user funds are not affected, as treasury funds were used to replenish liquidity pools. Subsequent steps have been primarily focused on Kusama governance.
A governance discussion kicked off over the weekend, which included a bounty of 10% of the amount stolen to catch the hacker. The discussion quickly turned into Referenda 237 to enact a forced transfer to return the funds from the hacker’s wallet. Unfortunately, the hacker managed to swap the funds for ETH and bridge out via Moonriver which resulted in the team recommending everyone to reject the vote as it was no longer viable.
The “Attempts At Governance” stream, as hosted by Jay, provides more details about this story as well as other governance news.
Whilst it is unclear if there could be some proposal to the Kusama treasury that could help with the lost funds, details of this novel attack are now known and hopefully parachain teams have taken precautions against similar attacks.
On a brighter note, the other top news story is Basilisk’s Liquidity Bootstrapping Pool (LBP) event, which was used for the price discovery of Tinkernet’s parachain token.
Whilst LBPs are not new, it was the first time it’s been done on Basilisk, which is also the first parachain with the primary use case as a liquidity protocol. For those unfamiliar with LBP, it is a smart contract pool designed to allow for fair price discovery of a token whilst using relatively small upfront capital.
As with all LBPs, the starting price of the token is usually “overpriced” to prevent whales or bots from buying and dumping during the event. Similar to dutch auctions, the price drops over time. Upwards momentum is only created as individuals buy, so the general guideline is don’t hastily ape in.
In addition, gas fees being really low on Basilisk, a unique 20% “repay fee” was introduced. This effectively means that while there is no fee for buying, a 20% “repay fee” would be incurred if sold during the event. Conversely, the pool pays the 20% “repay fee” as it’d be selling when you buy. This “repay fee” only applies to transactions until the “repay target” for the event is met, which further keeps the bootstrap costs low.
Lasting three full days, the LBP consists of two pairs: TNKR/KSM and TNKR/BSK. Extensive support includes a participation guide, support from wallets, various AMAs, and dedicated content created by @Crane, @usafmike, @DrCAO, and also by the Kusamarian.
As this is written, the LBP is finishing, and subsequently, the opening of XCM transfers so crowdloaners who received Tinkenet tokens can trade them on the snek app.
Additionally, the top 20 LBP participants will win the YoudleDAO NFT giveaway, whilst existing YoudleDAO ticket holders are expected to receive a Tinkernet airdrop.
Now, on to the usual flurry of news and content!

Governance
The governance hack on MangataX was one of the top stories this past week
- MangataX suffered a governance hack when an anonymous user overtook the council and force sent over 11K KSM to a wallet and has since distributed the funds making them unrecoverable. Fortunately, the Mangata team has fronted these funds to allow operations to continue. Learn more about this hack and how Magata handled it by watching Attempts at Governance from The Kusamarian. Referendum 237 was opened to force return these funds, but since the attacker already moved them from this wallet, the referendum is now useless.
- A proposal is live on Parallel Finance to list $POOP as part of $PARA and $USDT liquidity pairs on Parallel’s money market; it’s currently passing unanimously. Interested in how to propose something on Opensquare? Check out this stellar video from @DrCAO
- Check out this impressive proposal from DeStore, a decentralized Web3 based merch store, who is experimenting with merchandising in the paraverse. Learn more about what they offer by diving into their proposal. Check out this video to see an example of their online store.
